THE SPOON

Spoon
A bunch of players organise themselves to meet on existing servers, competing in Fortress teams, until the final team wins THE TRONIC SPOON. Feel free to add to the list under any category and please remember that all editions are constructive.

preparations
This version of tronic is a matter of organising ourselves rather than requiring any technical assistance from developers. It is about us as players. If we put in the preparation, advertise what we are doing on the forums, in clan forums too, advising people what the plan is, the day should run smoothly enough.

Discussion is currently scattered. The best place for discussion is on this page's talk page. The most common place for discussion is this forum thread.

To join in the competition, there are two levels of signup required. The first is to signup for a team. Each team manages their own signup. The second is for the team to signup for the competition. For this, a minimum of 5 teammates is required and a deadline for team signup is in place. (Note: the current deadline for team signup is a working date, there is not yet complete agreement on it)

The competition itself is intended to be self-organizing. So we are creating a framework under which this and future competitions will be able to self-organize. Because of this, the competition itself is in a state of flux. Hopefully it will be worked out in time for the games. :)

team formation
Most Armagetron players have had experience playing in teams, though because of the intensity of the game, a few players with good skills, have been intimidated out of the Fortress. One of the most important goals of the day is to develop teams. This means that players are supported by their friends and teammates, and any abuse that comes at them will be from opponents, which is kind of expected from some people. And the best way to deal with this intimidation is to gel as a team, play well, and respond by winning. So, there are a few ways of finding your teammates...

The deadline for forming a SPOON Team is March 31, 2006. When it is April 1, 2006 in all places on the globe, it will be too late to signup.

To join a team, you have to signup for the team and they have to accept you. The primary way this is handled is through the Team List. This is a general-purpose page provided for all teams to use as a signup page. Some teams prefer to put signup on their own page here on the wiki. If your team is one of them, you should make sure to link it from the Team List.

To start a new team, go to the Team List and add your team to the list. When you have 5 players, you need to add your team's name to the list on this page in order to participate in the competition.

* Team List - Specific team signup page
* finding your team - General guide to forming a team

SPOON Teams
After your team has a minimum of 5 players, to join the competition you must add your team name here.

* Knights of Ni
* mbc-clan
* anarchic wanderers
* Team somethingsomething
* Lobster Mafia
* [Crazy Tronners]
* fe --Lucifer: Are they going to play? They have 5 teammates, but they've been a little slow to organize. I'll put them here to make sure they get in if they want.
* ~"Xzl.Accel -- Sorry, I was hoping we could play, but it looks likt we can't. Too bad. Self Destructo 07:54, 6 April 2006 (CDT)

server allocation
A server that has volunteered to host the competition needs to do several things. First, the admin needs to put their name, their server's name, and the name their server will have for the duration on the here. Each server should use a clone of CVS Fortress settings, and those settings ship with v0.2.8 of the server. While variations are probably allowed, the players will generally prefer very little variation, so if you vary too much from those settings, you will likely not get to host any actual games. You might want to set TEAM_MAX_IMBALANCE and TEAM_MAX_IMBALANCE_PERM to high values to make team organizing easier.

Second, you should put in your everytime.cfg a notice for players that you are hosting for the SPOON competition and that players not participating will be expected to leave at any time should two SPOON teams show up to play a game.

Finally, you might consider giving your admin password to SPOON players so that they can use it to ban players not participating in the competition during actual play. Note: The banning features support time limits, so banning players that join is a reasonable response. You might edit your language file to reflect this if you like. Maybe you'll get lucky and Lucifer will make a package server admins can use to set themselves up. You might also consider being there for the games yourself so you can set MAX_CLIENTS when the players have gathered to start playing.

SPOON Server List
These are the servers that have generously offered to host games for the SPOON.

* Swamplords on Crack, by Lucifer. Will be called Swamplords SPOON during the competition and will run stock Fortress settings as ships with 0.2.8.
* Crazy Tronners Spoon Fortress by ed. Stock fortress Settings. Now upgraded to make use of shuffle.
* Z-Man's Spoon Fortress by z-man. Settings like CVS Test.

the event
The event itself is almost finalized. It will be a month-long tournament that runs April 1-30. All games must be complete for final ranking by the time it's May 1 everywhere on the globe. The tournament will be a round robin tournament.

The tournament consists of several rounds, described here:

Seed Round
In this round, each team will play each other team. A winning game earns them 1 point in the ranking, a losing game earns 0 points. There are no tie games in Armagetron.

'All Seed Games should be completed on or before April 16.'

While it's conceivable that some playoff games may proceed if it's clear the teams' brackets will not be affected by further seed games, every team must strive to play all games by April 16. Games not played that hold up progress on the playoffs will automatically be forfeited by the teams involved.

Please post results of seed matches here -> Seed Results

Playoffs
The playoffs start when the seed round is finished. Each team will have their seed points added up, then they will be ranked in order of number of wins, descending. The team with the most will play the team with the least, and so forth. Standard round robin procedures apply.

There are enough teams to push the playoffs to 3 rounds, with the third round deciding final tournament ranking. The teams playing for first and second place are also playing for the championship.

It would be nice if someone inserted a nice picture here describing how the playoffs will work

Other options
At time of writing, we're just 3 days from the start of the tournament. There is consensus on most of what is here on this page, but not for all of it. Please take this discussion to the forum thread referenced higher up on this page, and quickly. If nothing has changed by April 1, then what you see is what you get. So if you have a problem, take it to the forums and talk about it.

Game Organization
The competition is self-organizing. Teams are expected to join together and determine for themselves when to play the games. If the tournament is a round-robin tournament, every team is expected to play every other team once. So decide where you're going to meet. You can do this just by talking to the other teams during game play and then telling your own team how you'll meet.

Before the game, a minimum of 5 players from each team must arrive in the staging area they have agreed on. When the teams are ready to play, then they can go pick a server from the list and join it.

The current working deadline by which all teams must have played the games is April 16. IF THIS IS NOT MET FOR ANY REASON, all players are invited to play from 9pm GMT on 15/16th April weekend -- see FUN -- all in one day

Discussions of different ways to organize the tournament. Further discussion can be had on the forums. Note that until a consensus has been reached, the dates aren't final and neither is the procedure. But take part in the discussion and help push it to fruition. :)

The Games
The rules of the games themselves have yet to be determined. There is a strong push towards playing 3 matches and taking the best 2 out of 3 for each game. Other methods are here to be discussed, this area should be replaced with the final text before the tournament begins.

feasible round-period timing
How many matches will determine the winning team? Depends if we are playing a round-robbin event, if we take 8 hours, 2 hours, or a whole weekend to conduct the event.

Knights IRC

2006-05-11T16:53:01Z

1147367046:

IRC Channel - MUST READ
For our own organizational purposes, I created an irc channel on freenode for us called #armaknights. It probably won't get renamed if we rename the team, I don't know, up to you guys. I put the armabot in there as mod, so register with the bot when you get there so we can leave messages to each other.

Some of us will be lurking there whenever we're around. When it's time to organize games and stuff, we'll need to use it as a staging area for ourselves, and we'll invite other teams to use it for our games.

To join:

* Download an irc client if you don't have one already. The firefox family has one, there's also Konversation if you use KDE, most open source IM programs support irc.
* Set it up to connect to freenode with your preferred nickname.
* irc.freenode.net is the name of the server, if your irc client doesn't already know who freenode is
* Set it up to automatically open #armaknights if you want to lurk there.

Bot commands of importance:

Bot commands all must start with #, like so:

<code>
#armaservers
#news
</code>

Here are commands that are important to us:

#message <person> <your message>
#news
#news <item number>
#armaservers
#teamlist

Note: Teamlist should contain everyone's IRC name so that when there's a game brewing, it can be typed to trigger notifications for teammates that are lurking and get their attention. So before the games start, try to find out what you need to do to receive those notifications (besides lurk, which is obvious).

After the competition starts, make sure you lurk on this channel when you are available to play. Being in this channel doesn't have to mean you're available, but naturally if you're not, nobody expects you to be there. :) But when you are available to play, this is where we'll look. We might look around a bit if we have to to muster up another player, but no promises. The only promise is that notifications will come through this channel.

Periodically, when it makes sense, I'll send announcements. The armabot sits on 3 channels, #armagetron, #armagetronteams, and #armaknights. When there's a game that I know about that's staging, I will probably announce it through the bot, so all channels will get the announcement. Currently, I've seen dookatee, anjori, Your_mom, guru3, Manta, and Cray all in #armagetron. So we still need hank.

The Purpose of the IRC Channel
Sorry if this isn't well organized, but there's been some question what the purpose of this channel is. :) It's not to reform anybody's online habits, that's for sure. In a nutshell, joining this channel means you're ready to play a game. That's not all it's for, but that's a lot of it. The competition itself isn't yet completely organized, when it is I'll be putting more specific instructions here, but the way it's looking right now we're going to have to schedule our own games with the other teams. Then we're going to have to meet somewhere when it's time to play. To coordinate all of our schedules and stuff, we need some non-passive way to communicate. Now, I don't want to collect everyone's telephone numbers and call them (especially inconvenient since at least one of our players is on dialup anyay), but we need something like IM conferences. So we can use IM if that's better for us, but right now we're planning to use IRC.

The armabot is there to allow us to send messages and post passive information. There's a news plugin running so we can post scheduled games when we need to. We'll also have a page here on the wiki for scheduled games, and I'll probably make it in a few days. You should all subscribe to the wiki page when it's made. But that's a side point. The main point is that when the games are scheduled, which will hopefully be at least 3-4 days in advance of when we're supposed to play them, there will be a news item that appears in the channel. You'll type #news to see it.

Starting about half an hour before game time, teammates who intend to play in that game should arrive in the channel. I'm hoping that "game time" will be a range, like 2-3 hours, instead of a specific time, but that will depend a lot on what the other teams think. I know from experience that even with a hard-coded game time we should expect to wait 30-45 minutes after that time to have enough players, it's just the way these things work. To eliminate that problem as much as possible, we should each plan to be in the irc channel at least half an hour before game time. If the arrangements with the other team involve any additional steps, we'll take them, but for our own purposes, we'll always plan to meet in the channel first.

In the channel we'll work out our lineup, provided the tourney game rules allow us to spend some time setting up. We'll work out what order we'll join the server so that everyone arrives in the position they should be in, how we'll handle moving around in the lineup so that we don't have to play any rounds short a player, that sort of thing. We'll settle who will start as goalie and who will start as center, who will make break calls if we use them. This is all stuff we want to work out away from the other team if possible.

Now, when it's time to take a break (my last post tried to push rules that included a 10 minute break between matches in a best 2 of 3 game), we can huddle in the channel and talk tactics and stuff. Any changes to the lineup can be made there, and for those of us who don't have any problems running irc client and the game, we can use it to deal with the fact that spectators can't chat, in the case that we have alternates waiting on the sidelines.

So what kind of commitment to irc do you need to make? Very little. Try to install an irc client, join the channel, and get some familiarity with a few commands with armabot. When it's time to meet for the game, join the channel. If you have problems running an irc client while playing the game, then by all means turn the sucker off when it's time to join the game! If you're going to start as an alternate, keep it on so you can chat with us if need be. Remember, though, that a lot of us play fullscreen and won't see what you're saying. If you don't have these problems, then you should stay in the channel until the game is over. Maybe we'll have some post-game discussion afterwards, and if you quit your client to play the game, you should rejoin the channel.

Since we're going to hang so much important communication on the irc channel, you should make sure you familiarize yourself with it a bit before the games start. Currently I'm expecting them to start on April 1. So make sure you've identified with freenode if you want (required for /msg to work for you), make sure you can send and receive messages from armabot, and that you can check the news. It's neat if you learn more about the bot, it's got some useful plugins loaded (and some fun stuff). Also, visit the #armagetron channel, make sure you know about the #armagetronteams channel.

We should generally try to get other teams to meet us in #armagetronteams. If they don't want to use IRC for some reason (a possibility), then we'll work something out. Otherwise we'll try to get them into #armagetronteams. If all else fails, we'll offer our own channel for all players to meet in. We might start a side channel to have our own conference before the game.

8th Team

2006-05-11T16:52:45Z

1147367046:

Spoon
We will play at the THE SPOON to defeat Team somethingsomething. Where all others have failed, we will prevail.
The Team name can be changed by a majority vote. I chose 8th_Team [8T] because we're the 8th team.
We'll have a lot of fun! Do or do not, there is no try! and of course May the force be with you.

We will automatically be the weakest team, because we did not play any placement match.
So we have to play against Team somethingsomething first.

See here for the playoff results and matches: Playoffs (The Spoon)
News
13-14.05.2006 - Return to the PLAYOFFS !?
We will fight Team MBC 13. or 14.05.2006 18:00-21:00 GMT.
See Dates below.

Dates
I can't schedule training everyday (takes to much time), so please try to find 8th team players and organise training at will! Write an email and/or contact other players if they are available.

* Saturday 13.05.2006 18:00-21:00 GMT Possible Match vs. MBC
* Sunday 14.05.2006 18:00-21:00 GMT Possible Match vs. MBC
* Try to train on CVS Fortress and/or CVS Sumo

Convert the date to your timezone and be on "Z-Man's Spoon Fortress" at 19:30 GMT:

Note
It's good to have more than the minimum required 5-8 players.
(Also some players might not be able to play once the date is set.)
We'll try to give everybody a chance to play, especially if we win against Team somethingsomething.
The other teams are probably easier if we get past Team somethingsomething.

Use the Talk:8th Team for discussion or contact User:joda.

Match History
:PLAYOFF MATCH 26.04.2006 20:00 GMT 8T vs. ?? ... lost 3:0 but fought quite well in the second round with 8:7 players for us. Sadly some players could not play all the time.

Visitors' Voice
;from 2020, Anarchic Wanderers
:Well done Joda for setting this page up, forming the team, and being brave enough to start all this. And well done team for setting up and trying to go against ??. Hope you had fun, and I look forward to playing against you guys as a team sometime in the future.

Some <code>code text</code>. Yes, it worked.

Math doesn't work right now, apparently I have to upgrade the server. Go ahead and use regular math formatting according to MediaWiki, and don't worry if you can't read it right now. I'll take care of it.
