We have an [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Relay_Chat IRC (click here if you don't know what IRC is)] channel on freenode that gets some traffic. There's a fair amount of development talk there, but there's plenty more to be had.

== Joining the IRC Channel ==

Pick your favorite [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_IRC_clients IRC client] and connect to freenode. You can connect to the server irc.freenode.net, then join #armagetron using the user interface of your IRC client or the command "/join #armagetron"

Alternatively use an easy web interface such as [http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=armagetron%2Carmagetron.tourneys Freenode's].

Once there, you'll find plenty to talk about, I'm sure. There is one thing you should not do, however: enter the channel, say "hi!", maybe ask a question, and leave after a minute of getting no response. If there is no discussion currently going on, everyone has their chat windows in the background and simply won't notice you in time. Have some patience.

== Bots ==
As of writing this, there are two active bots on the channel : ljrbot and Frobot.
ljrbot is owned by luke-jr and Frobot is owned by Jip, conteact them if you have a problem with the bots.

To use ljrbot use:

Here is some useful commands that "should" work on both bots
calc
weather <city/postalcode/zipcode, country (if outside USA or canukistan)
google <search query>
list (lists all available commands)
help (help, obviously)
later (use later help for a list of options)

Dont ever say ]y or ]yandere in #armagetron... (even if luke-jr does).
It starts an annoying and complex game and should only ever be mentioned in #Yandere

Flynn's Arcade aims to be similar to the actual movie game grid, with emphasis on maneuvering skill, not just speed and rubber (although high speeds are quite possible). A server created by a student of internalDrive's iD Tech Camps program. iD Tech Camps is a computer camp that is held in many locations across the United States. iD Tech Camps' official game is Armagetron Advanced, so it probably deserved a national server. This server is pretty crowded during the summer and may contain a few newbies. However, there is typically at least one experienced player on. Regardless, it is a very fun server with constantly active admins.

This server is hosted with a mod of Armagetron Advanced Dedicated version 20081218_alpha on a retasked Sony Vaio. Efforts are being made to replace it with a faster server, but users have been experiencing few problems. Users generally have pings ranging from 50 to 150 on average.

Administrators are Master Chief, SmOoThIcE, Wall-E, Puffyfluff and Snoopilicious. Server stats, ladder info, and who is playing can be viewed at http://www.internaldrive.info. Forums are at http://forums.internaldrive.info. The official site of internalDrive is http://www.internaldrive.com. A racing server is also available.

These servers are hosted or paid by the members of the Night Walkers Clan. They include Dog Fight, Ctf, Ctfs, and Racing servers. Sometimes the ctfs server is down but the Df and Racing servers are always up. The racing server is always being added to but is experimental at this point. The racing server also features authentication.

[[User:ØniTrøn|ØniTrøn's]] personal server. Due to miscellaneous limitations, it is only run as hybrid when he is on and decides to run it.

== Race Server ==

This is the first server of its kind, but the setup is simple: You all start at about the same position of a long narrow alley with many obstacles in it. Whoever arrives first at the other end and hits the winzone there gets declared the winner — if anyone makes it there, that is. Many different obstacles that are tricky to escape, small killzones, sticky rim walls, a passage where the alley gets even narrower or splits, killzone- only rounds, the ability to lay mines to get rid of your followers and the turbo make this server an experience you don't want to miss!

You drive on the server a genuine running — head at head — with a speed from 0 to > 700. Obstacles will try you there to stop. The level are labyrinth-well-behaved however without erring courses. One must also never the way seeks to separate to simply only loose-race. There are different types of level. Times an obstacle run, times goes it through narrow tunnels, times must you try between the barks to drive. Adrenalin impacts are guaranteed.

Similar to any race server, get to the end first, and hit the win zone. Just here, if you slow down, or make a wrong turn, you smash into the death zone, that is quickly expanding behind you.
With an arrange of different maps and brake to boost, it is a very fun server.

The Lobster Tub is a combination of the server settings of In Limbo, Shrunkland, and The Lobster Cage to make one pretty swanky server. Both have a single use turbo instead of a brake. They also are the first official Armagetron servers to have their own Public Teamspeak Server.

Players spawn on 2 sides of an arena and basically shoot to the death.The extremly high rubber combined with the fact that there is no tail makes it almost impossible to core dump, so shooting is basically the only way to kill. Laser Tag hosts monthly tournaments and is just an all around fun server.

This is not really at all important since the above is self-organized. This is my pitch to potential teachers looking for reasons to take time out of their schedule. However, the benefits of playing from the Academy as opposed to just going in game are great. The Academy gives a new player three things. The first is apparent, it eases the steep learning curve and gives them a head start into Fortress. The second, a little deeper than the first, is that it gives them a experience Fortress player to connect to, a name in the crowd to latch on to. Immediately, from the start, they are part of the Fortress community. Community is a strong reason for all of us to play, alongside the gameplay itself. The third gift is a little experience self-organizing in the style they will need to for Ladles, Bowls, and Cups.

=== Boxing ===

Boxing is simply driving a wall completely around another player, so he can't escape and will eventually run into it. Some players like to create a tight [[Glossary#Sealing|seal]] on their exit from this manoeuvre by [[Glossary#Digging|Digging]] a wall, other players like to give their victim a small chance of escape and do not [[Glossary#Sealing|seal]] the box completely.

=== Camping ===

Camping is generally defined as the deliberate avoidance of confrontation by working an area of the grid away from other players, and therefore needlessly prolonging a match. [[Glossary#Boxing|Boxing]] yourself into an area of the [[Glossary#Game Grid|Game Grid]] in order to 'camp it out' is seen as very dishonourable.

=== Capture the Flag (CTF) ===

Capture the Flag is a game mode in which opposing teams try to return the enemy's flag to their own zone, whilst defending their own flag. Complex strategies can unfold, with individual players defending their own flag, [[Glossary#Spawn Point|re-Spawning]] core dumped players by driving through their own zone and defending the player currently holding the enemy flag.

To 'de-rez' or kill an opponent on the Game Grid, by causing them to drive into a wall.

=== Cutting ===

Cutting is the simplest way of attacking an enemy [[Glossary#Zone|Zone]], essentially driving your cycle through the gap between the goalie and the end of his wall, 'Cutting' him off.

=== Digging ===

Although technically a misuse of the [[Glossary#Rubber|rubber]] mechanics in Armagetron Advanced, it is essential to understand the basics of digging in order to survive on the [[Glossary#Game Grid|game grid]]. Digging refers to the use of a players [[Glossary#Rubber|Rubber]] reserves to get as close as possible to a wall without dying, before turning to grind.

=== Double / Triple Binding ===

The act of associating multiple keys to the same action, such as turning. By pressing multiple keys in succession it is possible to execute very tight turns.

=== Fortress ===

Fortress is a game mode, in which opposing teams try to overwhelm and 'capture' each other's zones. This game mode is very often played in two teams, with one or two players defending their [[Glossary#Zone|Zone]] while the others attack the enemy.

=== Game Client (or Client) ===

The game client is the software that allows you to play Armagetron Advanced, and is most often simply called 'the game'. It takes user input from the keyboard, and displays a graphical representation of what is happening in the game to the screen. The game client also has a large number of different settings, allowing for different input configurations, detail settings, player profiles, etc. Plus the ability to connect to a [[Glossary#Server|server]] on the internet, allowing for on-line play against other human opponents from around the world.

=== Game Grid ===

The playing area that a game of Armagetron takes place within. This could be an size and shape depending on the current [[Glossary#Map|Map]].

=== Ganking ===

'Ganking' is a relatively recent term, used most often in [[Fortress]] games when a zone is overrun by outnumbering the defence, eg. three attackers versus one defender. This tactic relies on the server settings allowing a zone to be taken by force of numbers.

=== Grinding ===

The act of running very close to a cycle trace or sometime an arena wall to benefit from the wall acceleration effect. A sound effect and sparks will normally accompany a grind.

=== Kick ===
Kicking is when you vote to get rid of a player because they are causing a nuisance. Occasionally, a kick vote will be used maliciously by some players, however this rarely succeeds and in fact often backfires. Player kicking is disabled on some servers.

=== Lag ===
Lag is the perceived time delay between making an action and seeing the result on the screen. In a local game, this delay is imperceptible, however online games are subject to network latency, as well as numerous other factors.

=== Map ===

A map contains the configuration and layout of the [[Glossary#Game Grid|Game Grid]], and can change numerous settings including the shape and area of the Game Grid, wall positions, player [[Glossary#Spawn Point|Spawn Point]]s, number of [[Glossary#Axes|Axes]], [[Glossary#Zone|Zone]] sizes and positions, etc.

=== Respawn ===
The act of reviving your teammates after they die by going into your base or respawn area.

=== Rubber ===
Rubber is a mechanism that helps to account for [[Glossary#Lag|Lag]], where time is artificially slowed as your cycle approaches walls, this allows you to react to a situation that would ordinarily have already happened and killed you. If a cycle exceeds its rubber limit at any time, it is considered to have crashed into a wall. Rubber is normally regained at a steady pace.

=== Server ===

The computer (or software that resides on it) that 'serves' game information to [[Glossary#Game Client|game clients]], this acts as a hub for game clients to connect to and play a game with each other. In the context of Armagetron Advanced, the term server usually refers to the 'dedicated server' version of the game, that allows [[Glossary#Game Client|game clients]] to connect and play, but does not allow direct play through a local interface.

=== Spawn Point ===

A point on the [[Glossary#Game Grid|Grid]] where a player 'blinks' into existence. In some game modes it is possible to revive or 're-spawn' dead players at their spawn points, whilst in others play continues and players re-spawn in the next round.

=== Team-Kill (TK) ===

A Team-Kill is when a player kills a team-mate, this is usually unintentional although it can have repercussions if not apologised for.

=== Zone ===

An area of the [[Glossary#Game Grid|grid]] surrounded by a coloured, semi-transparent, passable wall; sometimes corresponding to a team's colour which denotes ownership. Zones can serve multiple purposes, such as fortress areas, win zones and death zones, and are 'activated' by keeping your cycle within them (Zone activation can involve the collapse of a zone, such as in the [[Fortress]] game type, or the capturing of a flag, seen in the [[CTF]] game type).
