Hi, my tron nick is Self Destructo (that's kinda obvious isn't it. :P). Most people call me SD, and that's what I prefer to be called in short. :)

== How I came to find Tron ==
Well, I got this linux machine called Lindows (now called [http://www.linspire.com Linspire] after Microsoft sued them for the mock Windows name). I was in search for a good game, and was downlaoding everything that looked like it might be cool. One of those games I came across was Armagetron. Back then there was only 2.5.0 available for debian core, but despite that, I gave it a try anyways. Well, I got hooked, and around about 2 years later I am still hooked. :D I don't guess I played any other game than this one for a long long time.

== How I got my nick ==
Well, like most people, my first day playing the game online, I was a newb. But I was having fun though and that was what mattered. Now, I kept turning around to grind my own wall for speed, but the walls were so sensitive that everytime I tried to grind my own wall, I would kill my self. I kept changing my nick to fit how I was playing until I ended up getting Self Destructo and it still fit. :) Well, today I still have the same nick, even though I by no means live up to it ''most'' days. Now a days I just like the irony that goes with it I guess. Plus I plainly hate name changing for any other reason than cloaking.

== My History in Tron ==
Well, I played along for quite a while and got good. I don't remeber too many clans in the game like there is now, but it wasn't long before I was in one. The first tron clan I was in was the [God] Clan. That's probably surprising for people that know how religious I am. What even more surprising, was my nick and it fit my game quite well. [God]Almighty was my nick. (Shame on me) Everyone loved it except my dad who got onto me quite well for it, but I deserved it. I only had this nick for about a month or two then I got my computer taken away from me (bad boy :O) for about a year. Then I came back to tron wondering where my fellow clanners were, and no one had seen them for about 6 months.

== When I became [MBC] ==

So, well, I got unrusty under my old nick. The old Goshdarn server was gone (my favorite and the server I learned how to play on) so I played on around on what was available. This was when I found the MicroBusCity server and I loved the style of play on it. It wasn't too long before I asked if I could join the clan. About a week later I was an [MBC] member.

While I was in MBC I made alot of new friends which I still have today. I was all about progreesion and working to make things better. Eventually I started renting a server from [http://www.distortgaming.com DistortGaming] making it MBC's Team Play server. I still have the server today (of course under a different name :P). Not but one or two months after this I left MBC for the ~*SP*~ (SpeedeRs) clan.

== When I became a SpeedeR ==
Well, I joined the SpeedeRs when they were small. I made lots of friends there too. I was soon voted in a thier Armagetron division leader. Soon after I was setup right beside the founder of the clan after I saved his butt in a fight with GEL (Battlezone II division). After a while though, our two headed leadership of the clan wasn't working and so I left. Soon after SP didn't have a Armagetron division. But they did build it back after things (kinda) healed. I hold nothing against these people and would rather not bring up the story ever again.

== ~"XzL.Accel Clan ==
When I left SP I took 2 guys with me, my faithful buddies Punch and Vital (aka. Rebel) Together we started our own clan called The Accel Clan. Today our clan is successful because we focus on being buddies and not domination. We are small and will always stay small. And we will always stay buddies no matter what is spit in our face - because that's more important to us than our clan is. As of today, we have 13 members: 12 guys and 1 girl (Abby). We also have a Battlezone II and a Battlefield 2 division. We may eventually make a COD2 division. :D [http://xzlclan.com Come visit us sometime.]

== Armagetron Fortress League ==

The AFL is a seasonal competition that runs as a round-robin tournament. The regular season consists of a series of games with each team playing every other team followed by the playoffs, culminating in the ultimate championship. It will run in the fall and spring of each year and two champions will be crowned every year.

League competition, for anybody who's not sure, is that style of play where you play regularly scheduled games against a known list of teams. At the end, your team gets ranked against the others, and you play for a championship title.

In the community, we have had a number of good tournaments, but the one thing they all had in common was that they ran more or less in one day. While this is fine for a tournament, it is fundamentally different than league play. League play adds a new dimension to the competition. It requires you to be at your best as often as you play, to watch the schedule and practice with your team. One week your team might decide it needs to work on its best defense because it's playing the top-ranked team. The next week you might switch out your goalie so your regular goalie can go push a grudge against someone on the other team. There's drama, excitement, love, loyalty, honor, and all the other stuff that makes an epic.

That epic has finally come to Armagetron, and some would say it is overdue for its arrival.

== Summer Competition ==

This summer, in the month of July, we intend to run an abbreviated season. It will run for the 4 weeks of July, with a miniature playoff going down in August sometime. The schedule is being worked out now, we'll have more information on it as it becomes available. For now, we're planning on no entry fee, teams will have to follow all rules even though the scheduling will not be able to pit every team against every other team twice as is planned in the longer seasons. The winner gets to say they won.

== Fall Competition ==

The league's official startup will be in the fall of 2007. The fall season will require an entry fee which will go to pay any expenses incurred by the functioning of the league. The fall season will be a complete season, where every team plays every other team twice. It will be a round robin tournament, essentially, where the regular season is the seed round for the knock-out portion of the tournament. We are planning for the playoffs to consist of the top 8 teams from the regular season, and we hope to expand to 16 teams asap, but we'll probably never exceed 16 teams in the playoffs. Instead, we'll find some other way to rank teams so that there are 16 for the playoffs.

It will no doubt be a lot of fun, so get your teams organized and get ready.

== Discussion of the Entry Fee ==

I hate to have such a fee, but I think that for the league to survive and grow, some way of collecting money to make certain expenses will be required. We hope to use the money to first provide trophies of some sort (t-shirts are planned currently) for winners of various awards, secondly provide quality servers for the competition, and thirdly to compensate league organizers for their time spent organizing and maintaining the league. Fourthly, if some large corporate sponsorship were to occur, as with other leagues, profits would be shared with the teams themselves as well as server administrators who have volunteered their servers for the competition. Teams are free to seek their own sponsorships, of course. The entry fee will be for the whole team, not for each player. So a team that only manages to put 6 people on their roster will pony up the same fee that a 10-person team pays. I'm sorry for the disparity here, we'll try to keep the actual fee as low as possible, just remember that we want to build a long-lasting league, and I'm not convinced it can be done without some money coming in to finance the league.

Self Destructo: /* Troubleshooting */

Here's straightforward instructions on how to set up a complete windows environment for building a distribution. If you just want to hack on the game, you only need these instructions up to big step 3. These are here to help newcomers to get into hacking the trunk quickly, but their also here to document how releases are built for windows.

There are 4 big steps, each comprising of many little steps. Each step is for building the trunk. Building a release tarball based on the trunk should follow logically from here, but may not. Consult specific release documentation for more information on building a release tarball, if it's there.

== Installing the IDE ==

We use Code::Blocks. The trunk should be built with the latest available nightly snapshot. We're somewhat dismayed at this situation as we made the switch to Code::Blocks when 1.0rc2 was the latest release and we thought the 1.0 release was impending. We are open to alternatives, but we need feedback from actual windows developers, unless you all want us to pick a linux-centric build system.

The original instructions can be found [[Windows_Development_System#IDEs_.28You_need_only_one.29|here]].

To build and run the game, you will need Python and Code::Blocks. Code::Blocks itself requires MingW, and additional tools available from MingW will be needed to build the trunk. Here's a list, in no particular order.

* Code::Blocks nightly
** requires a mingw dll that we recommend you put in %WINDOWS%\system32 and a wxWidgets dll that we make the same recommendation for. Following this recommendation allows you to upgrade your Code::Blocks installation by just unzipping a new nightly snapshot.
* Python. 2.4 is known to work, 2.5 is experimental for us at this time, but we'll be moving to 2.5 as various Linux distributions pick it up.
* NSIS is needed to build a binary distribution
* Subversion client
** TortoiseSVN gives you a nice GUI around SVN, but is considered optional.
** Subversion, from subversion.tigris.org is required for the automated build to work, and many of the scripts needed to make a regular build likely require it.
** Neither of these clients are needed if you're building a source release.
* MingW
** Use the latest version of MingW available. It can be a real pain to install, we hope they'll take care of that sometime soon.
** This has to be installed before Code::Blocks is run, ideally. The requirement may be imaginary, but it's good practice to install MingW first anyway.
** You'll need gcc, g , bison, and swig, at the very least to build the trunk. A release tarball may not need bison and swig.

Note: At the time of writing, the trunk doesn't build in windows. Hopefully we'll remember to update this page when it does.

== Satisfying Dependencies ==

Satisfying dependencies in Windows is very easy. You just download the most recent release of the winlibs.zip file to build the trunk, generally. Sometimes that won't work, such as when the trunk requires new libraries that aren't required by the most recent release. If you're building from the trunk, you'll want to checkout the winlibs module.

This is early to talk about checking out the source, but it's needed. The directory structure you need looks like this:

* Armagetron Project directory (you create it, you name it what you want)
** armagetronad
** winlibs

You'll create this directory structure by either unzipping a source release and a winlibs archive, or by using subversion to checkout the two modules listed. For reference, the url for the modules is:

:armagetronad
;https://armagetronad.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/armagetronad/armagetronad/trunk/armagetronad
:winlibs
;https://armagetronad.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/armagetronad/armagetronad/trunk/winlibs

That's all there is to it.

Well, not really. We need to figure out how to get Ruby in there, and Boost is a bit problematic right now. Those two are the main reasons the trunk doesn't build, at the time of writing. (However, there are miscellaneous problems in the build files from regular changes made in Linux that have been migrated to Mac OS X, but due to lack of developer interest, and lack of developers, haven't yet been migrated to Windows)

== Building Armagetron Advanced ==

Building the game isn't as straightforward as the last step. Sorry. Here's what you do, assuming a fresh checkout:

# Run win32\update_version.bat
# Start Code::Blocks
# Open win32\code_blocks\ArmagetronAd.workspace
# Build
# Run win32\makedist.bat

Now you should be able to play the game.

Gotchas:

* update_version.bat and makedist.bat both need to know where python is installed. The easiest way to deal with this is to put python in your path. In Windows 2000, right-click My Computer, select Properties. Go to the Advanced tab, and in the middle you have Environment Variables. Open that. Find the Path variable and edit it, by putting ";C:\Python24" on the end (if you used the default installation location. If you didn't, put the right path to python.exe).
* Not running the batch files will result in version.h not being found while building. If you see that error, it's because you didn't run update_version.bat.

== Building a Self-Extracting Installer ==

Right now, nobody knows how to build an installer from the trunk. Z-man knew back in 0.3.0, and hopefully he'll chime in and tell us how he did it then.

#Download and install NSIS http://nsis.sourceforge.net/Download
#Open the file: win32/armagetronad.nsis

== Troubleshooting ==

If you want to build armagetronad (tested with 0.2.8.2 branch, target dedicated) in windows you may have this errors:
* '''src/defs.h:105: error: new declaration `bool isblank(int)'''': in file armagetronad\src\defs.h change:
** ''inline bool isblank(int x){ return ((x == ' ') || (x == '\t')); }'' '''to''' ''//inline bool isblank(int x){ return ((x == ' ') || (x == '\t')); }''
In other words, comment the line. This function doesn't seem to exist in Windows or Solaris 2.8.

;JDawg
:PsYkO: I was very pleased with this month's tilt... However, I feel that because of ping differences a small change should be made to disable advantages of higher pings (INSTAS!). I talked this over with Oblivion earlier and he felt it was a good idea too: Change the scoring system so points are not given for coredumps, but for rounds won, because instas will still count as points, and can win a team a match with luck. The rounds won would each give a point to the team it was won by, and matches would go up to 10 or 15. I'm sure many other players would agree with this, especially those with efficient computers or those who live close to the location where the server is hosted. These are the people who get insta'd the most. From reading your previous backtalk you seem to be against not counting instas, and you also said that 5 instas will probably not change a match. I disagree, in my match against xD, Durka's team, my players, who had lower pings were insta'd around 10 times or more, these were in crucial points of the matches too, and put us at a great disadvantage, seeing as how our team got 5 or less instas the whole time. Please take this into consideration. Thanks :D

;Self Destructo
:I must admit that I am with JDawg on this one Psyko. My team had 4 instas in one round. All 4 of us were insta'd. And it really does make a big difference. And JDawg and Oblivion's idea would probably work to help with this problem. It would at least make things more even for the teams. I hope you consider it.

Back then there was only 2.7.0 available for debian core, but despite that, I gave it a try anyways. Well, I got hooked, and around about 2 years later I am still hooked. :D I don't guess I played any other game than this one for a long long time.

== How I got my nick ==

I only had this nick for about a month or two then I got my computer taken away from me (bad boy :() for about a year. Then I came back to tron wondering where my fellow clanners were, and no one had seen them for about 6 months.

== When I became [MBC] ==

== When I became a SpeedeR ==
Well, I joined the SpeedeRs when they were small. I made lots of friends there too. Eventually some of them became enemies in the long run because of misunderstandings, and not heeding warnings. One thing that is for sure. I was practically holding the Speeders up by myself and when I left it crumbled to peices. Anyways, that's some of my history I don't want to bring back up because alot of things are debatable, and several people hate me for it (probably is just jealousy).

== ~"XzL.Accel Clan ==
As of today, we have 8 members. 7 guys and 1 girl (Abby). :D [http://xzlclan.com Come visit us sometime.]

== When I became a SpeedeR ==
Anyways, that's some of my history I don't want to bring back up.

== ~"XzL.Accel Clan ==
As of today, we have 8 members. 7 guys and 1 girl (Abby). :D [http://xzlclan.com Come visit us sometime.]

Well, I got this linux machine called Lindows (now called [http://www.linspire.com Linspire] after Microsoft sued them for the mock Windows name). I was in search for a good game, and was downlaoding everything that looked like it might be cool. One of those games I came across was Armagetron. Back then there was only 2.7.0 available for debian core, but despite that, I gave it a try anyways. Well, I got hooked, and around about 2 years later I am still hooked. :D I don't guess I played any other game than this one for a long long time.
I only had this nick for about a month or two then I got my computer taken away from me (bad boy :() for about a year. Then I came back to tron wondering where my fellow clanners were, and no one had seen them for about 6 months.
Wikified the whole table, should be easier to edit now, because the source code is a table, too.
The coloumns don't have a constant width anymore, but I didn't find a solution that would preserve the table structure in the source code, so I left it.

Self Destructo: /* SPOON Teams */

A bunch of players organise themselves to meet on existing servers, competing in Fortress teams, until the final team wins THE TRONIC SPOON. Feel free to add to the list under any category and please remember that all editions are [[contributor's guidelines|constructive]].

=preparations=
This version of [[tronic]] is a matter of organising ourselves rather than requiring any technical assistance from developers. It is about us as players. If we put in the preparation, advertise what we are doing on the forums, in clan forums too, advising people what the plan is, the day should run smoothly enough.

Discussion is currently scattered. The best place for discussion is on this page's talk page. The most common place for discussion is [http://forums.armagetronad.net/viewtopic.php?t=3223 this forum thread].

To join in the competition, there are two levels of signup required. The first is to signup for a team. Each team manages their own signup. The second is for the team to signup for the competition. For this, a minimum of 5 teammates is required and a deadline for team signup is in place. (Note: the current deadline for team signup is a working date, there is not yet complete agreement on it)

The competition itself is intended to be self-organizing. So we are creating a framework under which this and future competitions will be able to self-organize. Because of this, the competition itself is in a state of flux. Hopefully it will be worked out in time for the games. :)

==team formation==
Most Armagetron players have had experience playing in teams, though because of the intensity of the game, a few players with good skills, have been intimidated out of the Fortress. One of the most important goals of the day is to develop teams. This means that players are supported by their friends and teammates, and any abuse that comes at them will be from opponents, which is kind of expected from some people. And the best way to deal with this intimidation is to gel as a team, play well, and respond by winning. So, there are a few ways of finding your teammates...

'''''The deadline for forming a SPOON Team is March 31, 2006. When it is April 1, 2006 in all places on the globe, it will be too late to signup.'''''

To join a team, you have to signup for the team and they have to accept you. The primary way this is handled is through the [[Team List]]. This is a general-purpose page provided for all teams to use as a signup page. Some teams prefer to put signup on their own page here on the wiki. If your team is one of them, you should make sure to link it from the [[Team List]].

To start a new team, go to the [[Team List]] and add your team to the list. When you have 5 players, you need to add your team's name to the list on '''this page''' in order to participate in the competition.

* [[finding your team]] - General guide to forming a team

=== SPOON Teams ===

After your team has a minimum of 5 players, to join the competition you must add your team name here.

* [[Knights of Ni]]
* mbc-clan
* [[anarchic wanderers]]
* [[Team somethingsomething]]
* Lobster Mafia
* [Crazy Tronners]
* fe --Lucifer: Are they going to play? They have 5 teammates, but they've been a little slow to organize. I'll put them here to make sure they get in if they want.
* [[~"Xzl.Accel]] -- Sorry, I was hoping we could play, but it looks likt we can't. Too bad. [[User:Self Destructo|Self Destructo]] 07:54, 6 April 2006 (CDT)

==server allocation==

A server that has volunteered to host the competition needs to do several things. First, the admin needs to put their name, their server's name, and the name their server will have for the duration on the here. Each server should use a clone of CVS Fortress settings, and those settings ship with v0.2.8 of the server. While variations are probably allowed, the players will generally prefer very little variation, so if you vary too much from those settings, you will likely not get to host any actual games. You might want to set TEAM_MAX_IMBALANCE and TEAM_MAX_IMBALANCE_PERM to high values to make team organizing easier.

Second, you should put in your everytime.cfg a notice for players that you are hosting for the SPOON competition and that players not participating will be expected to leave at any time should two SPOON teams show up to play a game.

Finally, you might consider giving your admin password to SPOON players so that they can use it to ban players not participating in the competition during actual play. Note: The banning features support time limits, so banning players that join is a reasonable response. You might edit your language file to reflect this if you like. Maybe you'll get lucky and Lucifer will make a package server admins can use to set themselves up. You might also consider being there for the games yourself so you can set MAX_CLIENTS when the players have gathered to start playing.

=== SPOON Server List ===

These are the servers that have generously offered to host games for the SPOON.

* Swamplords on Crack, by Lucifer. Will be called Swamplords SPOON during the competition and will run stock Fortress settings as ships with 0.2.8.
* Crazy Tronners Wild Fortress by ed. Will be named Crazy Tronners Spoon Fortress for the duration. Will have stock 2.8.0 Fortress settings.
* Z-Man's Spoon Fortress by z-man. Settings like CVS Test.

=the event=

The event itself is almost finalized. It will be a month-long tournament that runs April 1-30. All games must be complete for final ranking by the time it's May 1 everywhere on the globe. The tournament will be a round robin tournament.

The tournament consists of several rounds, described here:

== Seed Round ==

In this round, each team will play each other team. A winning game earns them 1 point in the ranking, a losing game earns 0 points. There are no tie games in Armagetron.

''''''All Seed Games should be completed on or before April 16.''''''

While it's conceivable that some playoff games may proceed if it's clear the teams' brackets will not be affected by further seed games, every team must strive to play all games by April 16. Games not played that hold up progress on the playoffs will automatically be forfeited by the teams involved.

Please post results of seed matches here -> [[THE_SPOON_SEED_RESULTS|Seed Results]]

== Playoffs ==

The playoffs start when the seed round is finished. Each team will have their seed points added up, then they will be ranked in order of number of wins, descending. The team with the most will play the team with the least, and so forth. Standard round robin procedures apply.

There are enough teams to push the playoffs to 3 rounds, with the third round deciding final tournament ranking. The teams playing for first and second place are also playing for the championship.

'''It would be nice if someone inserted a nice picture here describing how the playoffs will work'''

== Other options ==

At time of writing, we're just 3 days from the start of the tournament. There is consensus on most of what is here on this page, but not for all of it. Please take this discussion to the forum thread referenced higher up on this page, and quickly. If nothing has changed by April 1, then what you see is what you get. So if you have a problem, take it to the forums and talk about it.

= Game Organization =

The competition is self-organizing. Teams are expected to join together and determine for themselves when to play the games. If the tournament is a round-robin tournament, every team is expected to play every other team once. So decide where you're going to meet. You can do this just by talking to the other teams during game play and then telling your own team how you'll meet.

Before the game, a minimum of 5 players from each team must arrive in the staging area they have agreed on. When the teams are ready to play, then they can go pick a server from the list and join it.

'''''The current working deadline by which all teams must have played the games is April 16. IF THIS IS NOT MET FOR ANY REASON, all players are invited to play from 9pm GMT on 15/16th April weekend -- see [[FUN -- all in one day]]'''''

Discussions of different ways to organize the tournament. Further discussion can be had on the forums. Note that until a consensus has been reached, the dates aren't final and neither is the procedure. But take part in the discussion and help push it to fruition. :)
:[[FUN -- all in one day]]
:[[traditional knock-out]]
:[[self-organised pairings]]

= The Games =

The rules of the games themselves have yet to be determined. There is a strong push towards playing 3 matches and taking the best 2 out of 3 for each game. Other methods are here to be discussed, this area should be replaced with the final text before the tournament begins.

==feasible round-period timing==
How many matches will determine the winning team? Depends if we are playing a round-robbin event, if we take 8 hours, 2 hours, or a whole weekend to conduct the event.
:[[basic 1/2hour rounds]]

The fortress game is what is referred to when a map is built around the concept of a fortress zone. A fortress zone is an area that one team is supposed to defend against the other teams, while trying to capture the other teams' zones.

== History ==

Proof of concept of Fortress mode was created by Z-Man, and is still in the works.

== Objective ==

In this mode, your goal is to aquire your oposing teams "zone". To do this there are a number of stratagies.

== Strategies ==

* Use one or more players to defend your base looping around it and generally keeping the other team(s) out.

* If theres more then 3 people on your team and your off to the side try turning off earlier so the guy in the center isn't stuck and will not end up plowing into an enimy wall.

* Try bulldozing through the other teams offence using yourself as a kamikazi, you can blow a hole in the other teams defence and let another player on your team get through easier.

* If the server has the team chat code use it (/team ''secret message here'') using this is helpful for building stratagy and keeping your enemies in the dark.

There is a more detailed discussion of [[Fortress Tactics]] available.

== Settings on the Test Server ==

*Just in case anyone was wondering, the current fortress test server is Z-mans(the games creator).

*Explosions are set to 2 to make blocking a ramrod/plow/steamroll easier.

To conquer a zone you need to follow this guideline
(Attackers are opposing team members inside the defenders zone)
(Defenders spawn inside their zone, they must stay in the zone to count as defending)
*1 attacker, 0 defenders: 5 seconds to conquer.
*1 attacker, 1 or more defenders: not conquerable.
*2 attackers, 0 defenders: 2 seconds to conquer.
*2 attackers, 1 defender: 3.3 seconds to conquer.
*2 attackers, 2 defenders: 10 seconds to conquer.
== Setting up your own Fortress Server ==

These are the settings you need to use to setup your own fortress server:

<pre>
# fortress conquest settings roughly after philippe's suggestions
# (the first days, the defaults from settings.cfg were used)
FORTRESS_CONQUEST_RATE .3
FORTRESS_DEFEND_RATE .2
FORTRESS_CONQUEST_DECAY_RATE .1

FORTRESS_CONQUERED_SCORE 0 # no points for conquering a zone
FORTRESS_CONQUERED_WIN 0 # the first conqueror does not win
FORTRESS_SURVIVE_WIN 1 # the team with the last active zone wins instead

FORTRESS_CONQUERED_KILL_MIN 0 # nothing bad happens to the owners of a
FORTRESS_CONQUERED_KILL_RATIO 0 # conquered zone

# the map: it is included
MAP_FILE Z-Man/fortress/for_old_clients-0.1.0.aamap.xml

# but beta1 and beta2 don't understand the format, so let their clients
# download the default map instead
MAP_URI http://resource.armagetronad.net/Anonymous/polygon/regular/square-1.0.1.aamap.xml

# and allow all older clients in even though the map differs from the default
MAP_FILE_OVERRIDE 0
</pre>

You can also put this line in your autoexec.cfg file to get exactly the same setting as on ''CVS Test Server: Fortress''
<pre>
include examples/cvs_test/fortress_complete.cfg
</pre>

Dont forget to change your starting map in autoext.cfg, example below.
<pre>
# defaults:
ARENA_AXES 4
MAP_FILE    Z-Man/fortress/for_old_clients-0.1.0.aamap.xml
</pre>

You'll no doubt notice there's a great deal of customization available. Think of the fortress as a primitive game object, and these settings are how you'll define its behavior. Between these settings, other game rules settings, and good map design, there are virtually limitless possibilities available. You don't have to limit yourself to Fortress play, you can use the fortress however you'd like!

Ok, now if a server is 0.2.8.0, then there are some chat features that you can use.

== Private Messaging ==
Now you can private message in game, and it's easy too. Here's how.

To private message SD, you would type into the chat:

'''/msg SD Psst, SD!'''

This would send the message "Psst, SD!" to SD.

Q: If there is a complex name that cannot be spelled on an english keyboard because of the strange letters... how is pm'ing done?

A: You can ignore them and use unaccented letters instead. '''/msg''' goes by the user name where that stuff is filtered out, and you can get the filtered name displayed with '''/players'''.

== Team Messaging ==
Team Messaging is easier than Private Messaging. All you have to do is type:

'''/team message_goes_here'''

And your team got the message!

== Action Messages ==
You can also do:

'''/me message'''

For instance,

'''/me is playing badly today'''

would display:

'''<nowiki>*Self Destructo is playing badly today*</nowiki>'''

'''Notice: Everything will be typed in the chat!''' Type:
* '''/login password'''

Where password is the ADMIN_PASS that the server admin give you. This logs you into the server's console. Every setting on the server is in your hands. Please, do not change the settings on the server unless you are allowed by the admin!

You will continue to be logged in until you logout or leave. To logout simply type '''/logout'''. It's not neccesary to logout though.

To kick you can simply type:

* '''/admin kick player_name'''

And this will successfully kick them. It's pretty fool proof, because thier's not much chance of you kicking the wrong person. Now, here's an easier method.

Now, for the easier kicking. Type:

* '''/players'''

This brings up the user list like the '''ul''' command did in 2.7.1. Find the client number you want to kick. Then:

* '''/admin kick #''' Where # is the client ID. And thier gone! Muahaha! The only problem with this method is that you might type the wrong number in and kick the wrong guy, then you got to explain it was a mistake.

So, what if they come back over and over again? Then type:

* '''/admin ban #'''

This will ban them for a server default 60 minutes (unless the admin has changed it). You can also define how many minutes you want them to be banned too. Like this:

* '''/admin ban # 5''' This would ban them for 5 minutes.

Please don't abuse your rights! If the admin doesn't want you banning then don't ban!

== Tips & Tricks ==
I use Instant Chat keys for almost everything. Here is how I have mine setup:
* '''Instant Chat 13: /login *password*'''
* '''Instant Chat 14: /players'''
* '''Instant Chat 15: /admin kick \'''
* '''Instant Chat 16: /admin ban \'''
* '''Instant Chat 17: /logout'''

I can kick someone in about 2-5 seconds this way. The backslash tells the chat to leave it open so you can fill the rest of it out with the needed info.

'''Disclaimer: I am not responsible for anything that happens to anyone because someone abused thier right to the server console.'''
Here you will find various guides to creating and administering game servers.

== [[Server Administration Guide]] ==

Basic guide for setting up a game server. This is your first resource when you decide to run your first Armagetron Advanced game server. It will walk you through setting up the server, making it available on the internet, basic game and physics settings, and it will set you loose. You should at least read it, even if some of the material strikes you as being particularly basic. It is intended to be used by a fairly computer-literate person who has very little or no knowledge of server operations of any sort.

== [[Advanced Server Administration Guide]] ==

So you've been running a server for awhile and now you'd like to do more with it? Maybe you've found that there are some punk-ass players out there that you really want to kick off your server? Maybe your players are asking for more, and you're saying "Hell yeah!" but you don't know what to actually do about it?

== [[Remote Moderation]] ==

So you want your server moderated but you have to explain how to kick and ban remotely to everyone that you want to help moderate it. Well, send them to this page!

== [[Servers]] ==

This is a current list of servers, who they are run by, and a description of what you might expect. Some link to pages about the servers, others link to the server's own websites.

{{:Servers}}

== [[Console Commands]] ==

A complete list of console commands.

== Making the server run as a service in Windows NT (2000/XP) ==
This is probably one of the easiest things to do for amateur admins. You start by editing the config files located usually (C:) Drive under Program Files and inside the Armagetron Dedicated Server folder. Once you alter those to your liking, create a shortcut on the desktop for the armagetron dedicated server.exe file. Click it ands you should have DOS prompt window show up that spews out text about what is exactly happening to and inside the server, you can mimimize it and not worry about it hanging for freezing. This is probably one of the easiest ways to run a server. '''Except that this isn't running as a service.'''

'''Drawbacks of running a server with Windows:''' Due to the intense graphics of the GUI windows uses. The computer may sturr up some lag for players. It is highly suggestive that if you run a windows server, make sure you have a higher end model computer and a fast connection.

== Setting up a server in Mandriva Linux ==

This guide will probably never be written because the information it contains will be obsolete when 0.2.8 is finally released. If you really want to know, ask Lucifer or Swampy, both of which run reliable and popular servers under Mandriva Linux.

Back then there was only 2.7.0 available for debian core, but despite that, I gave it a try anyways. Well, I got hooked, and around about 2 years later I still am still hooked. :D I don't guess I played any other game than this one for a long long time.

== How I got my nick ==
Well, like most people, my first day playing the game online, I was a newb. But I was having fun though and that was what mattered. Now, I kept turning around to grind my own wall for speed, but the walls were so sensitive that everytime I tried to grind my own wall, i would kill my self. I kept chaning my nick to fit how I was playing until I ended up getting Self Destructo and it still fit.

I only had this nick for about a month or two then I got my computer taken away from me (bad boy :() for about a year. Then I came back to tron wondering where my fellow clanners were, and no one had seen them for about 6 months.

== When I became [MBC] ==

== When I became a SpeedeR ==
Anyways, that's some of my history I don't want to bring back up.

== ~"XzL.Accel Clan ==
As of today, we have 8 members. 7 guys and 1 girl (Abby). :D [http://xzlclan.com Come visit us sometime.]

== [[Building Your Skillset]] ==

A top-level how-to that explains the base set of skills needed and gives some pointers on how to develop those skills. By focusing on skills and leaving tactical discussions to other articles, a new player will have a way to evaluate their overall progress in the game.
To private message SD, you would type into the chat:

'''/msg SD Psst, SD!'''

This would send the message "Psst, SD!" to SD.

TODO: If there is a complex name that cannot be spelled on an english keyboard... how is pm'ing done?

== Team Messaging ==
Team Messaging is easier than Private Messaging. All you have to do is type:

'''/team message_goes_here'''

And your team got the message!

== TODO: What's the feature called? ==
You can also do:

'''/me message'''

For instance,

'''/me is playing badly today'''

would display:

Self Destructo: /* Recommended Servers */

This article is for new players that want to get good at the game. It provides a path to follow and discusses the basic set of skills that are needed to play the game. Even older players can benefit from this article, and are invited to contribute their collected wisdom.

== Server Selection ==

Obviously, you're going to select servers on which you have low pings. The main settings to be concerned with are wall size, rubber, base speed, acceleration, and point awards. Some servers have brakes, others don't, so to build the most portable skillset, you need to work without brakes. I suggest unbinding your brake key while learning.

Each server, due to its settings, is going to emphasize a different part of your skillset. High rubber means heavy grinding. Infinite walls give a distinct advantage to mazing, and so forth. So to start, you should make sure you're playing several different servers that you can reach with a reasonable ping. You should also play servers that you have a really nasty ping on, so you can learn how to account for lag into your tactics.

=== Recommended Servers ===

Here are some servers that will help you to build specific skills. This is not a recommendation of fun servers or an endorsement of any particular server, however. Some of these servers have very specific audiences and some have very wide audiences. You will pick the ones you find the most fun based on your own tastes, this list is focused on servers that are good for building particular skills.

* Swampland - Open grid combat, emphasizes speed and maneuvering. For European players, this server is excellent practice in high ping conditions.
* Swamplords in Shrunkland - A small grid with long walls emphasizes mazing and close combat
* Tigers Network Classic - Brakes, low cycle acceleration, and infinite walls emphasize close combat. For American players, this server is excellent practice in high ping conditions.
* MicroBusCity - The intersection of Tigers and Swampland, this server is fast and with long walls. Point awards are based on survival rather than killing. This server emphasizes speed and maneuvering, and will help to develop the ability to switch between close combat and open grid fighting.
* Sumo - This server emphasizes close combat and mazing by placing each cycle in a ring with up to 3 other cycles. If you venture out of the ring for too long, you will die. You must survive in the ring. It is geared towards practicing to play the goalie position on a team-based fortress server, but the skills practiced are generally applicable to any close combat situation.

It's a common myth that playing locally will enhance your skills for internet games. I recommend not doing that if your ultimate goal is to play over the internet, because lag is a big enough part of the game that playing locally will affect your skillset negatively; you won't learn to account for lag.

The main areas (as I see them) that you need to work on are Grinding, Fast and Slow maneuvering, Dueling, Zoning, and Camera Control.

== Grinding ==

Grinding is such a basic part of the game that it's inarguably the first area for you to focus on. If you can't grind well, you can't accelerate well, it's as simple as that. Grinding can be defined as "Getting as close to the wall as possible without crashing, and turning so that you are running parallel to the wall". This is for any player's wall as well as the grid wall, with the player's walls giving you acceleration in the deal. In order to grind, you approach a wall and actually hit it. At the moment of contact with the wall, there will be a slight pause before your cycle explodes into pieces. The length of that pause is determined by your speed and the amount of rubber available. When you have run out of rubber, you explode. So the longer you wait before turning, the closer you will be to the wall after you turn. But if you wait too long, big bada boom.

Grinding is also a tactic, as well as a basic maneuvering skill. As a tactic, it's fairly straightfoward. To seal someone in a box, you have to grind the open points on the box, closing the box. To drive someone into a corner (any corner, not necessarily the grid corners) you have to grind both sides of the corner, leaving one side with enough space for the player to reasonably get in it and sealing the other side so they can't turn without hitting your wall. Grinding as a tactic can be effective, but is also easily defeated by better grinding, so while you need to build this skill first, it's a skill you should work on intermittently on its own. Instead, focus on working grinding into the rest of your tactics, where it will serve you best.

== Speed ==

Speed confers a strong advantage to a person who can maneuver at high speeds, but a tactical advantage can also be gained by being good at low speed maneuvering, especially against someone who depends on speed and is therefore likely to have a weakness in low speed manuevering. As you pick up speed, it becomes harder to grind any wall you approach, because the magical period during which you have struck the wall but haven't crashed is reduced in time, requiring faster moves to make the grind.

Speed isn't used as a standalone tactic, generally. It is part of every move you ever make, however. A speed kill is generally associated with a pretty simple kill that you earned through the advantages conveyed by high speeds, but the kill itself is usually very basic in nature. If your speed is high enough compared to the bike you've targetted, it is possible to build all four sides of the box around that bike before they escape and/or attack you directly.

To build skills at different speeds, you want to work in both an open grid and a pretty confined grid. The open grid will give you plenty of opportunities to work on grinding at high speeds, and the confined grid will give you plenty of opportunities to work on manuevering at high speeds in close quarters. The open grid will also give you an area in which to work on building a high speed and maintaining it. Reaching a high speed is generally pretty easy, but staying at a high speed is harder because as you get faster you have to grind more to stay fast.

== Maneuvering ==

Maneuvering and mazing are shades of the same skills. Mazing can be defined as maneuvering at close quarters, but that's not entirely accurate. Maneuvering is as much navigation as it is simple turning. The right moves can be found to kill everyone at any speed in any situation, so this is easily the most important skill you need to build. It's also the most basic skill of the game, so you will always be working on it.

Maneuvering as a tactic comes in three flavors: mazing, attack, and defense. Mazing is both an attack and a defense, and there's a fine line between a good mazer and a damn camper. Building a maze is tricky because it requires you to create paths that will confuse anybody who enters it, but still allow you to get out. Some players are easily suckered into mazes, others will go in to get you, and still others won't go in at all, preferring to fight in the open grid.

Maneuvering for attack is all about putting your wall in front of someone before they can turn away from it. You don't necessarily have to cross their line to get them to hit your wall. A little subtlety will go a long way in this regard. Tricking players to turn into your wall is generally more reliable (and harder) than just crossing their path.

Maneuvering for defense is all about putting walls in places to prevent someone from attacking you or allowing yourself a way out.

== Zones ==

Zoning is what you might expect it to be if you've ever played a zone defense in any regular sport. The grid itself is made up of several zones. As walls get laid down, several zones will appear. Generally speaking, you can expect the zones to appear in a predictable fashion, even though all players on the grid will behave unpredictably. Being able to play the zones is comprised of knowing how to take advantage of each zone to attack someone, and knowing how to maneuver into and out of each zone consistently.

Each cycle also has several zones around it that interact with the zones of the arena, and with each other's zones. Each attack you make will be initiated first from your cycle, then through a specific zone around your cycle, through the grid zone that the two cycles are in, and through/across a zone around the target cycle, and finally ending at the target cycle.

On a simpler note, defending that requires initiating some sort of action is about closing your zones to the other cycle. The easiest way to do it is to turn around and run, but it's not the only way.

Working the zones is key to using zoning in your tactics. Like any other sport, zoning can be de-emphasized. But like the other sports, doing so opens up weaknesses. Zoning is most used in team play, when understanding the interaction of the zones is vital to killing other cycles without killing your teammates.

On the whole, zones get tighter and smaller as more players enter the grid, so your zone-based tactics will need to be different depending on the number of players on the grid.

Zoning is a complex topic. It is also a very low-level topic, since most of what's conceptually a zone in play is handled by a part of your brain that you're not conscious of. Most players either have only a rudimentary understanding of zones or none at all, yet they still consider zoning in their attacks and defenses. If you want to consider the phrase "zone of influence", from military jargon, during your play, then that's probably all you need to do unless you're a hopeless taxonomic freak.

== Camera Control ==

Camera Control is all about being able to look around you so you know what's going on. It can be a hard skill to acquire, but it is an essential skill. Glance controls are the ones most used, because they give you the ability to look around and then return back to a regular view. There are other camera controls, such as zooming, and camera switching. You will need to find a combination of controls that works for you and then practice it. You will need to be able to switch views as instinctively and as easily as you turn your head while walking.

== Dueling ==

Dueling is obviously the skill that is used when it is you against one other cycle. The tactics change for one cycle versus many cycles. Dueling and jousting are similar, the difference between that jousting usually involves both cycles turning away and having to go back to the end of their traces to face each other again. This resembles medieval jousting quite a bit, actually. Dueling involves knowing the other player well enough to know how to attack them. Some players are better attacked by defending yourself instead and letting them screw up. Other players are better attacked in a straightforward fashion. Still others can only be defeated with subtlety and trickery. And still others only give you a few seconds to make an attack, and if it doesn't succeed you're dead. Dueling as a skill can be de-emphasized safely, if you're willing to sacrifice a point at the end of each round when it's just you and one other cycle. On servers that provide point awards just for being the last one standing (also known as the Camper Reward), you will have to duel the last enemy alive.

== Keyboard Layout ==

Choosing your keybindings is pretty tricky. In any discussion of keybindings, I find that most people have completely different keybindings. How your hands work together is important. I would suggest that piano players and expert typists should put left-hand moves and cameras on their left hand, literally, and right-hand moves and cameras on their right hand. As a guitar player, I find putting moving on my right hand and cameras (and score) on my left-hand works very well. It's important to remember that you can bind the same action to multiple keys. This brings us to double-binding versus non-double-binding. I don't want to get into it as a tactic or skill, but choosing your keybindings is integral to choosing your game. It's also a subject you should revisit periodically and see if you can make your keybindings better.

Like I suggested at the beginning, I recommend unbinding your brake for starters. You can bind it later and work it into your skillset, but there are distinct advantages conveyed on the player who can play without brakes that can't be denied. Some servers don't have brakes at all, others make their brakes an accelerator. Even among servers that have brakes the effect of the brake varies widely. Players also vary widely in their opinion of the brake. As a result of all of this, the skillset that is most portable amongst servers is the skillset that doesn't depend on any specific brake effect and can also easily assimilate the server's brake settings. After you've gotten fairly good and find yourself winning a few rounds by skill rather than luck, then you might consider binding the brake key and learning how to use your brakes on the servers that have them.
== [[Labyrinth_server|Labyrinth]] ==

The first of its kind, a maze server using automatically generated mazes that change every 5 minutes. While it's a mathematical certainty that some mazes must eventually be repeated, it is unlikely that you'll experience this phenomenon.

== [[MicroBusCity]] ==

This server has long walls and high speeds. Brake users need not apply. This server is a standard gladiatorial-style arena where you are expected to kill or be killed.

== Race Server ==

This is the first server of its kind, but the setup is simple: You all start at about the same position of a long narrow alley with many obstacles in it. Whoever arrives first at the other end and hits the winzone there gets declared the winner &mdash; if anyone makes it there, that is. Many different obstacles that are tricky to escape, small killzones, sticky rim walls, a passage where the alley gets even narrower or splits, killzone- only rounds, the ability to lay mines to get rid of your followers and the turbo make this server an experience you don't want to miss!

== [[RaceToWinzone]] ==

You drive on the server a genuine running &mdash; head at head &mdash; with a speed from 0 to > 700. Obstacles will try you there to stop. The level are labyrinth-well-behaved however without erring courses. One must also never the way seeks to separate to simply only loose-race. There are different types of level. Times an obstacle run, times goes it through narrow tunnels, times must you try between the barks to drive. Adrenalin impacts are guaranteed.

== [[Swampland]] ==

This server offers shorter walls and moderately high wall acceleration. It is also a standard gladiatorial-style arena. This server is run by Swampy.

== [[Swamplords on Crack]] ==

Lucifer runs this server to provide a gladiatorial fight with a twist: map rotation. Every new match you are faced with a different map. The maps available in the rotation are subject to change but are generally accepted from the community. High speeds and higher rubber make this a fight you won't want to miss, if you think you can handle the relatively small arena sizes.

== The Lobster Cage and Lobster Cage Fortress ==

These servers have Medium/Small Grid, Endless Walls(Fortress has limited but long walls), Moderate Speeds, with Moderate Acceleration. Rubber Is slightly above average, and is home of The group(not clan) The Lobster Mafia. Two things that makes these servers Unique: The brake in these servers act like a small turbo boost, which is your best weapon when you are one on one with another player. The turbo Lasts for 2 seconds. Once depleted it cannot be used untill next round. They also are the first official Armagetron servers to have their own Teamspeak Server. Be sure to check them out some time!

These servers are ran by DrJoeTron(Lobster Cage) and by Gomes(Lobster Cage Fortress)

Lucifer runs this server to provide a gladiatorial fight with a twist: map rotation. Every 5 minutes you are faced with a different map. The maps available in the rotation are subject to change but are generally accepted from the community. High speeds and higher rubber make this a fight you won't want to miss, if you think you can handle the relatively small arena sizes.
