Can we get rid of that News section and make it a link, the each day put the date and the new news? We would put the new news on top, but never delete the old, and if there wasnt any news just say No significant news today. That would be cool to be able to look back on past news and stuff.
Why oh why. Hm. Yeah, we do need special commands to do it. Ideally, each news item would be a separate, detailed article, and we'd just feed the headlines and summaries to the front page. Over time, doing it manually becomes very difficult to maintain, and eventually makes it impossible to do certain things with the news. Pretty frustrating.
We're on the same page for what it looks like, but you're going to have to trust me that a manually-edited feed is a pain to maintain. Here, look at this:
http://jameshoward.us/Main_Page

Also, dark colors on light or light colors on dark, but never light colors on light. Reason? Visually impaired people can't read them at all. Except for the really blind, who use a screen reader, but I imagine those folks aren't likely to be playing the game in the first place.

--[[User:Lucifer|Lucifer]] 21:51, 29 October 2005 (CDT)

ok so here are my suggestions for the main page. if this is the first page that potential new players visit, which it should be, then there should be several screen shots, and possible some art and a title of some sort other than Main Page. ---''raoul''

----

It's not actually supposed to be the first page potential players visit, we have a new website for that. This is for people already playing, and for new players who have found the game and played it and want to learn more.
**** The cycle's kinda small. Maybe a larger cycle? It's ok if the cycle size doesn't quite go with the wall size, that makes the picture more cartoony anyway. * Looks like you've just about got it. Here's a little trick that might come in handy, though. Say you put two spans right next to each other with no distance between them. Make one have in the background the cycle and the first part of the wall, and put a &nbsp; in the foreground. However many &nbsp's you need to make it fit. Then in the other put a tile-able background that is the rest of the wall. Then you should be able to put text in such a way as to stretch the second span so cover the whole phrase, within reasonable sizes of phrases. --[[User:Lucifer|Lucifer]] 22:02, 2 November 2005 (CST)
Why oh why.

In this mode, your goal is to aquire your oposing teams "zone". To do this there are a number of stratagies.

== Strategies ==

* Use one or more players to defend your base looping around it and generally keeping the other team(s) out.

* If theres more then 3 people on your team and your off to the side try turning off earlier so the guy in the center isn't stuck and will not end up plowing into an enimy wall.

* Try bulldozing through the other teams offence using yourself as a kamikazi, you can blow a hole in the other teams defence and let another player on your team get through easier.

* If the server has the team chat code use it (/team ''secret message here'') using this is helpful for building stratagy and keeping your enemies in the dark.
Americans and anyone else who knows can see I'm in central time and do the math if they'd like, everyone else can fall back to the offset given and work off UTC with it. [[User:TiTnAsS|TiTnAsS]] 18:16, 2 November 2005 (CST)

* Has to be php, the wiki is in php. I'm not sure if you know enough or not, depends on how much of what you know you've been able to both internalize and generalize. ;) Times listed are in CST because the server is in CST, but the time a user posts an item makes a difference independently from the server's time. I think it's useful to know if the crazy German posted at 3am his time or not, and I'd rather see that and an offset from UTC rather than a CST time and a username. --[[User:Lucifer|Lucifer]]
** Of course, <code><nowiki>~~~~</nowiki></code> can be changed to generate times in the editor's time zone, including offset. The reader can then set his preferences in his preferences. :-) --[[User:Jonathan|Jonathan]] 19:27, 2 November 2005 (CST)
*** Better to make it a more general case change, have it store in UTC and then change it to the user's preference. --[[User:Lucifer|Lucifer]] 19:33, 2 November 2005 (CST)
**** You contradicted the last sentence at the first bullet level. --[[User:Jonathan|Jonathan]] 20:01, 2 November 2005 (CST)
***** And your point is _____? There's no contradiction. In the first bullet I was talking about a time that the user manually enters, in the more recent bullet I was talking about a time that the wiki stores and then computes for display. Since I was talking about two different things, there's no contradiction. --[[User:Lucifer|Lucifer]] 20:18, 2 November 2005 (CST)
***** Pardon me, in the first bullet I was talking about a time that the wiki computes when the record is stored, and in the second a time that the wiki converts to UTC when the record is stored, and ''''then'''' converts again when its displayed. I'm still wondering what your point is, though. --[[User:Lucifer|Lucifer]] 20:20, 2 November 2005 (CST)
****** I may have misunderstood you. I thought you wanted to know the time in the editor's time zone? (and of course the wiki should be able to display anything in any zone based on the viewer's preferences) --[[User:Jonathan|Jonathan]] 20:34, 2 November 2005 (CST)
******* Ah, there's several comments that aren't combined that might need to be. :) If we have to manually enter the date, then the most reasonable compromise I can think of is for the editor to put his timezone and its offset. If the wiki is going to process a macro when the item is written (the same way our signatures are processed), then it should be put in the editor's timezone with an offset. Because in that situation the wiki is just doing a more automated version of what the user does manually entering the time. However, if the wiki is going to store a time to show when the news item was made, timestamping it, then it should be timestamped with UTC. From there we can decide, should it show according to the editor's time zone or should it show according to the reader's time zone, or according to the server's timezone? This last decision should be in User:Preferences and have a reasonable default. --[[User:Lucifer|Lucifer]] 20:40, 2 November 2005 (CST)
******* PS: I don't know what the wiki does, but if it currently transforms <nowiki>~~~~</nowiki> into a hardcoded time stamp, then I think that should be changed to store a UTC as well. :)

----

On a different note, can we get more accurate news reporting? Labyrinth isn't a "test" server, I'm intending it to be permanent. The settings might change, but I want a maze server, and there it is. :) Also, Belly of the Beast isn't down "temporarily", it's down "indefinitely". I may or may not bring it back up. If I bring up a fortress server, it will probably be called "Belly of the Beast", and it's likely it'll use maps generated from the maze generator program. :) Anyway, nitpicks mostly, but I've noticed other inaccuracies I haven't a chance to correct that are more important than these.

--[[User:Lucifer|Lucifer]] 18:23, 2 November 2005 (CST)

----

Tell me any of these of inaccuracies so i can fix em O_o. Ill fix those ones right now. Also, when get around to it I think ill try to write that for PHP, i'll have it include GMT, then their local timezone after, and note which is which. I don't mind fixing anything you have a problem with, but i cant unless you tell me it :-/
No, no way. I'm not working on it, though, so knock yourself out. ''--Lucifer''

----

Um, can we drop stuff like "non-official" and "official"? We don't need all this weird formality. :) There isn't really anything official anyway, except releases. So talk about variations of the game that people have set up. Make a Variations section on this page, and then underneath put some subheadings for the variations, and those would link to a page about them.

That page should contain information for players playing that variation and also information for server admins to set up a server under that variation.

Come to think of it, make a new page that lists variations, and we'll transclude that page here and in the Server Admin page.

Just try to keep in mind that there's nothing "official" or "non-official" about it. In the game we try to provide primitives that server admins and players can use to make games that are fun to play, and that's all this "Fortress mode" thing is. It's just a primitive game object that map makers can put on the grid and server admins can do so too.

----

Now you can see how I meant to do the transclusion. :) Edit [[Game Variations]] to add new variations and it'll automatically be included on pages where it's been included.
People like to extend and hack on Armagetron Advanced. Normally they just make moviepacks, sometimes they make other things. Maybe you'd like to make something but you just don't know where to start or what to do. These pages should give you some help in that pursuit.
What code hacks are available? If you've got a compiler available and a little bit of programming abilities, there are plenty of fun things you can do to the game directly. Who knows? Do something cool and put it here and it might make it into a future version of the game.
== [[Model Formats]] ==

If you want to make a new model, you're going to need to know what formats are supported by what parts of the code and where to put them. This is part of making a moviepack, but deserves its own separate discussion.

== [[Textures]] ==

How do you make textures? Where do you put them? What possibilities are there that are known? You'll have to dream up new possibilities yourself.

== [[Moviepacks]] ==

Wrapping it all up, put your model and textures into a moviepack! Here are directions on how to do exactly that and distribute it.
== [[Code hacks]] ==

What code hacks are available? If you've got a compiler available and a little bit of programming abilities, there are plenty of fun things you can do to the game directly. Who knows? Do something cool and put it here and it might make it into a future version of the game.
Here you will find various guides to creating and administering game servers.

== [[Server Administration Guide]] ==

Basic guide for setting up a game server. This is your first resource when you decide to run your first Armagetron Advanced game server. It will walk you through setting up the server, making it available on the internet, basic game and physics settings, and it will set you loose. You should at least read it, even if some of the material strikes you as being particularly basic. It is intended to be used by a fairly computer-literate person who has very little or no knowledge of server operations of any sort.

== [[Advanced Server Administration Guide]] ==

So you've been running a server for awhile and now you'd like to do more with it? Maybe you've found that there are some punk-ass players out there that you really want to kick off your server? Maybe your players are asking for more, and you're saying "Hell yeah!" but you don't know what to actually do about it?

== [[Servers]] ==

This is a current list of servers, who they are run by, and a description of the servers.

== [[Console Commands]] ==

A complete list of console commands.

== Making the server run as a service in Windows NT (2000/XP) ==

TODO

== Setting up a server in Mandriva Linux ==

This guide will probably never be written because the information it contains will be obsolete when 0.2.8 is finally released. If you really want to know, ask Lucifer or Swampy, both of which run reliable and popular servers under Mandriva Linux.
