To add a slave:
# Install python (can't build arma without it anyway, duh)
# Install twisted
# Install buildbot (buildmaster is 0.75, portage has 0.74, don't know if that's a problem or not)
#
svn co https://armagetronad.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/armagetronad/support/buildbot/buildslave

#
cd buildslave

#
cp armabuildslave.conf.sample armabuildslave.conf

#
vi armabuildslave.conf
and read the comments in the file. You need to fill in some of the values there. In particular, host should be "buildbot.davefancella.com", and port should be "9989". Also, make sure to put the username and password that the buildmaster administrator gave you for your buildslave.
#
make start

That's to run a slave on your machine. To actually add it to the system, I need to give you a user and password and do some work on the buildmaster.

To make a new buildFactory:

svn co https://armagetronad.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/armagetronad/support/buildbot/buildmaster
cd buildmaster
vi master.cfg

Actually, I'd suggest using your regular code editor, which for me isn't vi. The file is a python source file, so you might have to set syntax highlighting manually. Test your config file with "python master.cfg". That's not a complete test, for a complete test you'll need to run a buildmaster, but don't sweat it. Just worry about adding your buildFactory and/or tweaking existing buildFactories, and test it for syntax errors with the python interpreter.

Obviously to get it going live you need to tell me so I can update the buildmaster with the new config file.

== Adding a Windows buildslave ==

# First do everything to setup a windows development environment. You must use a recent CodeBlocks nightly build, the 1.0rc doesn't support batch builds and will not work in a buildslave.
# Install subversion for windows (this is in addition to TortoiseSVN)
# Install NSIS
# Add to your path environment variable the path to python, codeblocks, and nsis (subversion adds itself automatically)
# Install Twisted 2.4 (2.5 doesn't work with buildbot)
# Install buildbot
# Do the stuff listed up top about checking out the buildslave module from our svn repository
# Now decide if you want it to run as a service. If you do, open buildbot/contrib/windows/the one about the service and follow those directions, they're very good.
# If you haven't already, you've now learned you need to install Mark Hammond's win32 extensions to python. Warning: the python site has a bad link on it and a good link. The good link points to sourceforge, the bad link points to starship.

After all that, if you're lucky, you have a working buildslave in windows. With even more luck, it'll actually build the game.
Luciferhttp://wiki.armagetronad.org/index.php?title=Talk:Double_Binding&diff=21519Talk:Double Binding2008-08-03T02:45:16Z
Lucifer:

It looks like a bastard keyboard that was made in 1985, between the old mechanical typewriter style keyboards (like the C64) and what we've got now.

I guess it works well enough, though. :) ''--Lucifer''
You know, somewhere on the forums is a pic Locutus made of his layout that shows double-binding, but I forget where it is. ''--Lucifer''
How did you get "Dbind for weaks" from "Db is the crutch of the weak", just out of curiosity...
One day, my double binding suddenly worked as well as pressing ONE left and/or right key twice really fast. Anyone have any ideas why?

= Here's a brief message from the idiots that don't know how to edit wiki pages=

In case you're thinking about looking this stupid, please don't waste your time with it. It really is more valuable than that. These jokers are basically saying they hacked a page that anybody can edit, and I suppose they expect someone to recognize the difficulty of the task and therefore the superior skills of the hackers that edited a page anybody can edit. I bet they celebrate every time they pee. --[[User:Lucifer|Lucifer]] 08:23, 24 December 2007 (PST)
Here's all the information for the Spring 2007 Playoffs.

== Brackets ==

Home teams are listed first.

First Round

Second Round

Championship

Champions

Crazy Tronners vs Speed

The playoffs will proceed as follows:

First round will have 6 teams playing. These will be played the same as the games in the regular season, best 2 of 3. (Technically we're first-past-the-post here since the third match is optional if one of the teams wins the first two matches) These games will have the higher-ranked team as the home team and will be played on their server.

Second round will have 4 teams playing. The 3 that advanced plus the team that sat out the first round. Each game will be first-past-the-post, and the post is 3. So the first team to win 3 matches in a game wins the series and advances, the other team loses. These games will flip-flop servers. First match will be played at the higher-ranked team's home server, second match will be played at the other team's, and then back again, and so forth, until there's a winner. Please don't get lost switching servers. You guys do this all the time, so it shouldn't be that hard.

Third round is the Championship. This game will have the post at 4 and could be a very long game. At the end of the second round, if both teams that advance desire, the championship can be rescheduled for up to one week from then. If there is disagreement, the game will be played immediately following the second round (with a little break if need be). This game has several playable options. It can be flip-flopped as the last game. It can be played in its entirety at the FA AFL Server, or if z-man's willing, it can be played in its entirety at his server. Also, if wrtlpwned is willing, it can be played in its entirety on Fort Cafe. The two lucky teams will decide, and if they can't agree, it will be flip-flopped by default.

== MVP Nominations ==

The following players are automatically nominated for the Most Valuable Player award. Please begin voting! All votes must be signed, or it can't count. Remember, only people who played during the season can vote, and the only way we can verify that fact is if the votes themselves are signed. Sign with <nowiki>~~~~</nowiki> if you are a user here, or else just write your name. You must have played at least one game to be able to vote.

The votes will be tallied. In order to win, a player must receive 2/3 of the votes cast. If a player hasn't received a 2/3 majority, then the lowest ranked player will be removed and a second round of votes will be cast. This is similar to instant run-off voting, which may be the voting method in your country. We will continue voting until someone wins 2/3 of the total votes cast, or until everyone is eliminated except one person, whichever comes first.

== Brackets ==

TODO: the brackets

== MVP Nominations ==

My bad UT2, I told everyone to be there at 4:00 EST not noticing the discrepancy between AFL_Schedule and Google Calendar. SP may consider nominating me their MVP for that. --mkzelda

åppåritiøn says, "At least three of us thought the match was at a different time. The AFL_Schedule says a time that is 2-4 hours earlier than the AFL_Calendar. How are we to know which page has higher priority? Why have the calendar if it isn't to be used? The "add event to my calendar" function made the calendar more appealing than the schedule. We would like to reschedule. Despite what some have said, no AFL rules regarding rescheduling exist, leading us to believe it is possible and fair."
: It's a bit too late for me to reply to this, sorry, but the calendar page explicitly says that it is canonical and the google calendar isn't. The reason for that is that the google calendar itself isn't terribly well-tested for this usage, I had previously observed google's calendar not recognizing timezones properly and KOrganizer failing to correct properly. The google calendar therefore can't be canonical because there's no guarantee a player's calendar app will handle it correctly (even though it should, or it can't call itself a calendar app!). The idea is that the google calendar is a convenience, but you should doublecheck the main calendar. Google can give you notifications the main schedule can't give. About rescheduling: the rule is "no rescheduling is allowed". Period. I'm pretty sure it's stated in the rules, but I'll admit I may have forgotten to put it there since I made a lot of noise on this point on the forums during the initial design of the competition. Again, sorry if this is late, even if all it does is frustrate you more. --[[User:Lucifer|Lucifer]] 20:26, 9 August 2007 (PDT)

This page is intended to describe installation experiences with various Linux distributions. It covers installing the dependencies and installing the game itself.
The distributions are always mentioned in the version that was actually used for testing; the procedure for later versions or derivate distributions
is likely to be similar enough. The instructions assume you start from a default installation; if you deleted packages, you may also have deleted dependencies
the instructions assume are already installed. You're on your own then.

Unless stated otherwise, all commands have to be executed as the superuser root on the command line. You'll need to know how to open a root terminal/console.

= Peculiarities of Distributions =

== Ubuntu ==

Ubuntu does not install a root account like other distributions; instead, you are supposed to use the "sudo" command to gain temporary root rights. So, whatever the instructions
below say you should do at the console, prepend a "sudo " and give it YOUR password whenever it is asked for. Also, the password you need to give to the Autopackage installation, should
you forget the sudo, is YOUR password.

= Installing the Dependencies =

Before you think about installing Armagetron Advanced, you have to prepare your system for it. Don't worry, not much is missing from most distributions.

The complete list of requirements of current stable versions is libstdc++5, libSDL, libSDL_Image, libpng, libxml2 (version 2.6.12 or above) and of course OpenGL and GLU.
Depending on what you want to install, you can scratch some of that: If you install from source, you don't need libstdc++5, the libstdc++ that comes with GCC will be used, but
you will need development versions of all dependencies and the build tools GCC and GNU Make.
If you install a server, you only need libstdc++5 and libxml2. If you install from a .package, libxml2 is included and you don't need it installed.

All modern distributions already come with libSDL, libxml2, OpenGL and GLU installed, so usually, you don't need to worry about those.

The trickiest part is libstdc++5; we're compiling the binary distributions against it for compatibility with older installations, but modern distributions have moved on and
provide the version we need only in legacy packages.

== Debian 3.1 "Sarge" and Ubuntu 5.10 "Breezy Badger" ==

Do
apt-get update
apt-get install libstdc++5 libsdl-image1.2

It has been found that this step is essential on Ubuntu 6.06 "Drapper Drake". If you let autopackage install sdl-image for you (it can do that), the resulting installation does not work for everyone. Starting the game crashes immediately with an "illegal instruction" error. If you already have a non-working installation, remove the autopackage sdl-image with
package remove sdl_image
and follow the steps above to get a working installation.

== Fedora Core 4 ==
To get SDL_Image, do
yum update
yum install SDL_image

libstdc++ is tricker, the author did not find a good way. Improvements wanted :)

libstdc++ is available as a RPM on the FC4 dvd, in the path Fedora/RPMS. If you only have CDs, good luck finding the right one. To install it, mount the DVD/right CD and do
rpm -i <path-to-dvd>/Fedora/PRMS/compat-libstdc++-33-3.2.3-47.fc4.i386.rpm
The detailed filename is likely to vary on FC5+ or derivate distributions, but the important part is the libstdc++-33 here, because it's the compatibility library for GCC 3.3 compilates.
== SuSE 9.1 Personal ==

To install SDL_Image, you need to start yast2, go to the "Software" menu and the "Install and Remove Software" submenu. Hit "Search" and seach for SDL. Select SDL_image
from the list and let it be installed.

SuSE 9.1 comes with a version of libxml2 that is too old for our purposes; installing from RPM will not work. The .package comes with the parts of libxml2 we need, so you can
use that. Later versions should not have this problem, and you can use the same method as above, only seaching for "libxml" and picking "libxml2", to install libxml2.

= Installing Armagetron Advanced =

On the command lines here, the (-dedicated) part needs to be left out if you install the client and replaced by -dedicated if you install the server. Things in angle brackets <> need
to be replaced with whatever you downloaded.

== Installing from Autopackage (.package) ==

Autopackage aims to be an as-generic-as-possible third party software installation system. The Autopackage guys know far better than the AA developers how you
can work around the various distributions' quirks, so installing from Autopackage is the recommended over the other binary formats unless there is a package that
exactly matches your distribution.

Installing from autopackage is easy: download it, open up a console/terminal (does not need to be root) and do

bash ./armagetronad(-dedicated)-<VERSION>.<SYSTEM>.package -t

and follow the instructions. The -t is important, it will disable the graphical frontend. Unfortunately, that one crashes almost everywhere. If you don't have bash, try sh instead.

The .package is really just a shell script. If this is your first .package installation, you'll be prompted to
download and install some support code; accept that, this will only be required once. If you know your system's
root password, you should give it here. After the installation of the support code, the main installation will start.
If you don't give the root password here, Armagetron Advanced will be installed for your current user only without
endangering the system. I'd recommend doing that (that means, DONT give the password)
unless you really want a systemwide install. You may have to log out and log in again to see the installed start
menu entries.

Autopackage has means to find and install missing dependencies; nevertheless, it is better if you, before installing it,
try to install all dependencies using your distribution's native package system. If a later operation with your native package
manager pulls the dependencies in, you'll have them installed twice in possibly conflicting locations. That is another reason why
not giving the root password on installation is recommended; dependencies will then be installed for your user only, too, and won't
cause conflicts.

== Autopackage Experiences ==

=== Fedora Core 4 using Gnome ===

AA 0.2.8.1 x86_32: Works. The start menu entries' icons are missing.

=== SuSE 9.1 Personal using KDE ===

AA 0.2.8.1 x86_32: Works. The start menu entries are installed twice.

=== Debian 3.1 "Sarge" and Ubuntu 5.10 "Breezy Badger" using Gnome ===

AA 0.2.8.1 x86_32: Work without problems.

=== Kubuntu Breezy ===

AA 0.2.8.1 x86_32: Shouldn't be different than Ubuntu "Breezy Badget". It wasn't. Worked fine. Graphical installer worked fine as well.

=== Kanotix Live CD ===

AA 0.2.8.1 x86_32: Does not work. The autopackage support code tries to install itself into the read-only parts of the file system. The default user seems to be automatically promoted to have root rights, or at least autopackage seems to think that.

== Installing from RPM ==

To install the RPM, download it and do
rpm -i armagetronad(-dedicated)-<VERSION>.<SYSTEM>.rpm

== RPM Experiences ==

=== Fedora Core 4 using Gnome ===

=== SuSE 9.1 ===

AA 0.2.8.1 x86_32: Doesn't work because libxml2 is too old. Choose the .package installation instead.

= Uninstalling =

On upcoming versions, you just have to do
armagetronad(-dedicated)-uninstall
to get rid of everything, no matter how it was installed.
On 0.2.8.1 or earlier, this only works if you installed from source.
if you installed from rpm, do
rpm -e armagetronad(-dedicated)
If your source was a .package, do
package remove armagetronad(-dedicated)

= Authors' Recommendations =

Personal opinions follow.

== Z-Man ==

If you're new to Linux and are looking for a distribution where fresh versions of Armagetron Advanced are easy to install (which by no means should be your main criterion), Debian and Ubuntu are clear winners among the listed distributions. Of those, Ubuntu is said to have a better system installation, but I can't say anything about that. Even thogh I've grown up with SuSE and RPM, getting the dependencies installed was way easier the apt-get way.

== Lucifer ==

One thing you can do for most distributions is go ahead and install the Armagetron package they ship. That will let their dependency resolution program install all the binary dependencies you need. Then uninstall only the Armagetron package (it's usually out of date). After that, you only need to make sure a new enough libxml2 is installed, and 0.2.8.x should slide right in. If you do this in Gentoo or another source-based distribution, you'll be able to build a source release.
Luciferhttp://wiki.armagetronad.org/index.php?title=Working_with_SVN&diff=19549Working with SVN2007-07-23T07:13:26Z
Lucifer: Updated svn url

Don't you worry, working with subversion is, for everyday operation, just the same as working with CVS. In fact, rule 1 is that command line users get by pretty well by just replacing the cvs command with svn. Once you have a checkout that is.

ArmagetronAd SVN Repository:

https://armagetronad.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/armagetronad

This repository contains the main armagetronad module. Click [http://svn.sourceforge.net/armagetronad here] to browse the repository with your browser.

This page propbably can't replace reading the [http://svnbook.red-bean.com/ Subversion Book], but it should get you started.

== Commands ==

Most of this requires that you have a working copy checked out; see below how to get one.

=== For Windows Users ===

Use [http://tortoisesvn.tigris.org/ TortoiseSVN]. When any documentation says "do svn <command>", look for the command in your right-click context menu.
SVN properties (commands: "svn propget/propset/propedit") aren't in the Tortoise submenu, they're hidden in the generic "Properties" menu item at the bottom.

=== For Former CVS Users ===

"cvs update" becomes "svn update". It accepts a -r argument to fetch a specific revision just like in CVS. Note that in SVN, revisions are global.

"cvs commit" becomes "svn commit". In CVS, you've been told to always do "cvs update; cvs commit" together because your commit would fail whenever you were not up to date; that does not apply to svn. Commit and update as you see fit. You can pass your commit message with -m, if you like.

To see which files you have modified, you'd do "cvs -n update". That becomes "svn status" and doesn't require connecting to the remote repository.

To revert files, you'd have done "cvs update -C". This becomes "svn revert", again working without network action.

If an update or merge produces a conflict, it's not enough to edit the files and resolve the conflict. You have to tell Subversion afterwards that you did this with "svn resolved <filename>" before it lets you commit again.

In CVS, you would switch a checkout from the trunk to a branch, conserving your local changes, with "cvs update -r b0_2_8". In SVN, assuming you have the whole project checked out, you do
svn switch https://svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/armagetronad/armagetronad/branches/0.2.8

=== For New Users ===

(only covering the basics here)

Get a checkout as described below. If you want to get up to date with what the other developers have been doing, call "svn update". Edit the files in the checkout as you'd do on a local project, but stay away from the .svn subdirectories. They contain Subversion's status information. Before you update, you may want to review the changes you're about to get with "svn log -r BASE:HEAD".

If the update touches a file you have been modifiying locally, sometimes there are conflicts. They're marked with "C" in the output of "svn update". Before you can do anything, you have to resolve the conflict. Open the file in an editor; you'll see something like

<<<<<<< .mine
<your local version>
=======
<the other developer's version>
>>>>>>> .r2

You then have to look really hard at the two versions, remember what you tried to do here, determine what the other developer tried to do, and come up with a single version that does both. Afterwards, you have to call "svn resolved <filename>" to tell svn that the conflict was resolved.

When it is time to publish your work, do "svn status" to see which files you touched. If you know you only worked on a single task since your last commit and none of the changed files indicated by "svn status" look strange, simply do "svn commit", and enter an appropriate commit message describing your change either in the editor that pops up or via the "-m <message>" command line switch. If you did several things, do for every thing "svn commit <list of files of thing>", again with an appropriate commit message. If you can't remember what you did or if you want to check, do "svn diff <list of files to check>". Windows users have it easier here, they just commit and get a nice dialog where they can select the files to commit, and a doubleclick gives them the diff.

== Checkouts ==

The basic command to get a checkout is

svn co https://svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/armagetronad/ <target>

Where is a yet to be specified subpath in our repository (you usually don't fetch the whole thing) and <target> is the name of the directory where the checkout will reside in. In SVN, branches and tags are managed simply as different paths in the repository. So your choice of determines which branch or which tag and which module you're getting.

=== Layout ===

Subject to change with notice, is organized like this for core modules:

= armagetronad/<brag>/<module>

<brag> stands for "branch or tag" and is either "trunk" for the trunk, "branches/<branch name>" for branches and "tags/<tag name>" for tags. Branch and tag names don't have the same restrictions as in CVS (no dot, start with letter), so a typical branch name would be 0.2.8, a typical tag name 0.2.8.2_rc1. Note that 0.2.8.0 is both name of a tag for version 0.2.8.0 and of the branch leading to that version.

<module> is the module name. It's just "armagetronad" for the core source and "<former cvs name - armagetronad>" for the auxiliary modules armagetronad_build* and armagetronad_winlibs.

Common examples: To get the trunk sources, you would do

svn co https://svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/armagetronad/armagetronad/trunk/armagetronad armagetronad

To get the release building module on its side to make a release, you do

svn co https://svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/armagetronad/armagetronad/trunk/build build

To get the same for one of the earlier branches, you do

svn co https://svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/armagetronad/armagetronad/branches/0.2.8/armagetronad armagetronad
svn co https://svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/armagetronad/armagetronad/branches/0.2.8/build build

Sounds complicated and cumbersome for many modules? Just check out everything from the trunk with

svn co https://svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/armagetronad/armagetronad/trunk trunk

Whether you choose the name of the checkout to be the same as the last bit of the repository path is entirely up to you, but it's a good idea if you want to avoid confusion. You can do so by just leaving the second argument out.

Selecting branches is still cumbersome that way. That's why we're pondering to introduce

=== Workspaces (proposal) ===

Workspaces are parts of the repository that use a special subversion feature called externals to give you the checkouts you need for a specific task. You'll be able to get your workspace with

svn co https://svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/armagetronad/workspaces/<os>/<branch> <target>

or, if you want all workspaces,

svn co https://svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/armagetronad/workspaces/<os> workspaces

<os> is your operating system type, either "unix" or "windows". OS X probably counts as "unix". The workspaces will contain only those modules needed; the unix workspace will be missing the visualc, code::blocks and winlibs directories, and the windows workspace the build and build_eclipse modules.

<branch> is a symbolic branch name. We won't be making workspaces for every branch, only for those actually in use. <branch> can be one of "trunk" for the trunk, "bugfix" for the branch leading to the very next release, and "stable" for the branch leading to one of the releases after that one.

We'll be updating the workspaces to always point to the branches that meet the description. "trunk" will always be the trunk. Right now, "stable" would point to 0.2.8, and "bugfix" to 0.2.8.2, but that one is still managed in CVS, so "bugfix" will point to 0.2.8 as well. Changes to the structore will be announced; uncommitted changes to externals get lost silently if the repository path gets updated.

There are simple rules which change should be done in which of the workspaces:
* changes that are absolutely super-surely improvements in the short and long term go to "bugfix". Critical bugfixes, security fixes or zero risk bugfixes (adding NULL pointer checks, removing obsolete documentation) are the most common candidates.
* changes that are likely to be improvements in the middle term (think four weeks) and long term, but may have small startup difficulties go to "stable". All bugfixes that don't qualify for "bugfix" go here, as well as small features that were forgotten in the roadmap of a release series (anticipating Luke's protest here).
* Everything that is likely to be a long term improvement goes to "trunk". This is the default place for new features.
* Everything where it is not sure whether it is an improvement or not should go into an experimental branch that may or may not be merged back into the trunk. Workspaces for those are created on demand.

Name alternatives instead of trunk/stable/bugfix:
* trunk/branch/twig (following the tree metaphor)
* trunk/next/upcoming (depicting the release they're leading to)
* long/mid/short (for longterm, midterm and shortterm quality focus)
* gas/liquid/solid (states of matter representing the stability, easily extended to "plasma" for experimental stuff)
* alpha/beta/gamma (the classics, extended to gamma for release candidate quality)

Test workspaces have been committed in the original armagetron SVN repository. Get them as described above, replacing "armagetronad" with "armagetron". The two workspace names are "gas" and "liquid", pointing to the trunk and 0.2.8, respectively.

=== Merging ===

Merging one branch to another is done by checking out the branch that will be the target of the merge first. You need to know the revision number the branch that's supposed to be merged was created or merged the last time first, find it out via
svn log
or CIA. Then you need to execute the following command:

svn merge -r <last merged revision number>:HEAD https://svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/armagetronad/path/to/the/branch <local path of the checkout>

This will merge the changes into the working copy of the target branch, you have to resolve conflicts if they exist and then you can commit the branch. You can use the output of
svn log -r <revisionlastmerged>:HEAD https://svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/armagetronad/path/to/the/branch
as part of the commit message.

=== Private space (proposal) ===

We'll have a section in the repository reserved for private use; personalized copies of workspaces can go there, or branches where only one or two developers work on. The sub-category path would be "private/<user name>".

If a branch becomes more mainstream, it can be moved in with the main project.

At some point, private branches in the repository may be available to non-developers on request.

== Caveats ==

Your commits don't appear in "svn log" until you do "svn update". This is important for alpha builds. Always update before you make an alpha, or the ChangeLog will not reflect your latest changes, and the revision that the alpha will carry (later publicily in the version, for now as a fingerprint file) will be wrong.
Luciferhttp://wiki.armagetronad.org/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Sitenotice&diff=19548MediaWiki:Sitenotice2007-07-23T06:40:48Z
Lucifer: notice about highway 2 hell's hacked executable.

{{AFLTbl}}

This is the in-progress schedule for the July short season.

== Schedule Notes ==

Times are provided in two columns. The first column is GMT and is not adjusted for daylight savings. This is the canonical time, and any mistakes made translating to other time zones are mistakes, GMT will be used to resolve such mistakes. The second column is the time in New York City and Toronto, which will be EDT for the short July season. For other seasons, daylight savings adjustments will happen mid-season, and this column should always reflect the correct time in New York City and Toronto for the given time in GMT. This should help to accomodate North Americans, and for those who do not follow federal US daylight savings practices, you should be able to work from the time in either New York City, Toronto, or GMT. For anybody in the US, you probably already know your own local time in relation to New York City.

== Scheduling Practices ==

Each game is allotted 1 hour of playtime. Games can run late, and a team failing to show up for a game when scheduled back to back is excused if the first game runs late. This could upset a busy schedule, so please adhere to the schedule! However, a team that shows up late to the first game and causes the second game to run late could face forfeiting the second game. You only get the pass if you showed up on time in good faith for the first game, and the first game legitimately ran late.

Games will be scheduled on Wednesdays and Sundays, in GMT. For North Americans, this means the games are scheduled Tuesday evenings through Wednesday afternoons and Saturday evenings through Sunday afternoons.

Special note about terminology: We use GMT for convenience, but some of you may have learned UTC. The difference between UTC and GMT is about 30 seconds every now and then, and therefore irrelevant for our purposes. However, since many of us use internet time servers to synchronize our clocks, when we say GMT, we actually use UTC, since UTC is what the internet time servers transmit.

== The Schedule ==

Two notes about the schedule. Marked so far are the days that games can be scheduled, with two exceptions. The Ladle plays on the first Sunday of every month, we need to find out which day in July it's going to play on. Durka's TST is timed to run two weeks after the Ladle. We want to avoid collisions with both tournaments so that AFL members can participate in the other tournaments.
{{:AFL_Deadline_Summer_2007}}

All deadlines have passed. Many teams still haven't declared a home server. Without a home server, you'll be scheduled to play on servers you probably won't like! [[AFL_Registration|registration requirement]]. Please use the talk page for this page to declare your home servers, you are now racing to declare your home server before the games get scheduled. Games will not be rescheduled due to failure to declare your home server, so hurry it up before '''you get screwed on your server choices'''.

== Team Registration ==
Please place your team name here with a link to your roster, and optionally a link to your own website.
No recording due to the fact that I was recording and I was idle-kicked before match 1 finished. Sorry about that. No screenies either therefore, but proof can come from Ed's server logs if you really want it. Scores were roughly ¦x¦ 100 - 80 CT, and ¦x¦ 100 - 55 CT. After a mutual vote in the server, Subzero was nominated as the MVP from this game.

The game procedure is pretty simple. First, both teams muster in some area. Then they meet on the server. Then they play the game. When it's over, they post the results along with at least one recording, and vote for MVP.

== Mustering ==

Teams are recommended to meet up in #afl , but not required. However, in the case of a forfeit, the logs kept by aflbot are going to be used to determine who forfeits, or if both teams forfeit, so it's in your best interests to have all of your players arrive in #afl to meet the other team. The problem with that, of course, is that there's nearly 80 players in the league, but don't let that intimidate you. Plenty of irc channels have 100+ names in them, and conversation proceeds nicely.

Teams should meet up 15 minutes before the scheduled game time and spend those 15 minutes making sure everyone can connect to the server. Teams are recommended to meet up 30 minutes before the scheduled game time to warm up.

== Meeting on the Server ==

For private servers, players will join by custom connect. For public servers, obviously they can join through the master server list. At least one player in each game *must* join with a client that is recording, and the client *must* be the latest 0.2.8 version (currently 0.2.8.2.1) or the latest 0.3 version (currently 0.3.0). The game is not valid without a recording, so make sure you make one! Players not recording, or players that don't intend their recording to qualify the game as a league game, are allowed to use any client version they wish, but for obvious reasons they shouldn't use anything before 0.2.8.0.

== Playing the Game ==

There should be an ingame admin present. If there's not, then your game is in a heap of trouble to start. Not necessarily league trouble, but there could be significant interference in the game without an admin capable of dealing with it. Both team captains, or at least leaders on both teams, need to say something like "The game starts next match" or something to that effect, which signals the start of the match. The ingame admin can then give the command to the server to start the match, and then the next 3 matches will be the league game. Only in rare and excessive circumstances will an alternate procedure be used.

== Posting Results ==

Teams are advised to maintain their own wiki pages with their win/loss records and awards received. All teams must go to [[AFL_Spring_Results|Results]] and post the results of the game after each game. Each game requires a recording (zipped), screenshots of the scoreboard after each match, and a statement of who won. Games additionally require a list of players nominated for MVP, and a poll. Again, it is recommended this award be determined in #afl after the game by voting, but using the wiki is also allowed. However, no other way is allowed. So, a poll on the forums isn't allowed.

The results must be posted within 24 hours of the scheduled game time. If this doesn't happen, both teams will be counted as forfeiting the game and it will be marked as a loss for both teams.
Luciferhttp://wiki.armagetronad.org/index.php?title=AFL_Rules&diff=19369AFL Rules2007-07-08T05:33:59Z
Lucifer:

For judges, and players who'd like to know how these rules will be used, we have a separate document for [[AFL_Rule_Interpretation|interpreting the rules]].

Also, [[Game Procedure]] tells players how to play an actual game.

== Teams ==

# Teams need a team name, and a team name-tag which will be inserted in the name of the player during games.
# Teams can consist of up to but not exceeding ten members.
# Teams are responsible for their own organization. Lack of organization can well end up in forfeiture of a game, so make sure that you stay on point and organized.
# Every team will make a roster, which will not change over the course of the season.
# Teams can drop players from their teams at any time during the regular season. Teams must notify a judge of drops before the next game.
# To add a new player to a team, the team must get approval of a judge.
# After the playoffs begin, no new players can be added, and a drop requires league approval (approval of a judge).
# Teams will consist of a team captain and up to nine other members
# Teams can contact the league for whatever reason through the #afl or #armagetron channels on irc.freenode.net or on the armagetron forums at forums.armagetron.net. Due to the potential for time-wasting conflict, we will not accept references to something he or she said on this or that server or so and so's forum for the purposes of mediation. The AFL pages on wiki.armagetronad.net will keep current contact information for all league contacts.

== Servers ==

# The behavior of all servers participating in the AFL will be exactly the same, and settings will be provided by the league to the server admins.
# Servers will use rules approved by the league. We'd like to allow cycle_rubber modifications within reason to correct for lag, but due to the widespread notion that rubber has nothing to do with lag, we can't make this allowance. Help change the mistaken widespread notion!
# Teams must choose a server to be their "home server." We recommend teams choose a server where their team has a low ping as a whole and with an administrator that is friendly to the team. Ideally, teams would provide their own home servers, but due to the bandwidth and performance requirements, the league is attempting to provide servers for teams to choose from.

== Games ==

# In games, teams can have a maximum of five players on the grid. Teams that show up with less than 5 will be expected to play with what they bring, or forfeit. Teams that show up with more than 5 will be allowed to use their extras as alternates and make substitutions. However, at no point can more than 5 teammates appear in the round. If this should happen, the extra player should kill himself within seconds of the round starting, or else the round will be declared invalid, possibly the match declared invalid, or some other really nasty penalty will be given. The league's approved settings should reduce/eliminate the risk of a team playing over 5 players accidentally, but it cannot eliminate the risk of a team starting a round with only 4. Tough luck.
# Each game will have a home team and a visiting team, as in professional sports.
# A game will consist of three matches played at the home team's declared server.
# The winner of the game is the first team to reach two match wins. If this should be the first two matches, playing the third match is optional, but allowed if time permits.
# For a match to be considered as being conducted as a league match, there must be a recording made with either the latest release of 0.2.8 or the latest 0.3.x release (currently 0.3.0). While any version is allowed for play, a recording made from the trunk will not be considered as having met this requirement. We are studying whether or not a server-side recording is to be accepted.

== Season ==

# Matches will generally be played on Tuesdays UTC, and Sundays will be used as an alternative day in case of complications with Tuesday, but we can't guarantee the matches will always be scheduled on those days. Check your schedule.
# Over the course of the season, each team will play each other twice, one game played at their declared home server and one game played at their opponent's declared home server.
# Teams will be ranked during the season according to their win-loss record. Any ties brought about by this system will be resolved by head to head results.
# The final rankings of the season will be used to seed teams in postseason play.

== PostSeason (Your chance to win a chip!) ==

# To qualify for the post-season, a team must consist of at least 60% of the roster that existed at the time of their second game in the regular season.
# The postseason will consist of a series of one-off elimination games in a bracket-tournament setting.
# Teams will be seeded according to the final season rankings.
# Teams will play at the declared home server of the higher seeded team or an available quality neutral league server.
# Teams will be eliminated in every round of the tournament, leading up to a game between two final teams, which will be the championship game, and the winner of this game will be declared champion. Should the playoffs contain 8 teams or more, the top 4 positions will be determined, otherwise only the championship game will be played.

== Rewards ==

# The prize for winning the championship game will be some t-shirts with a to-be-determined graphic by DrJoeTron. Note: this does not apply the the Summer 07 season.

== Sportsmanship ==

# Don't be a douche. We'll look at the recordings, and we'll know, and you'll know, and we'll tell your mother.
# Also, some really bad sportsmanship can entail severe penalties, like forfeiture of the game, suspension of a player, and even suspension of a team.
# Bad sportsmanship can be considered any of the following:
#* Insulting the opposing team
#* Declaring the game to be a bad game due to the fact that your team lost. While it may be true that it was a bad game, it's still bad sportsmanship to raise a fuss about it. If you truly believe the game was bad, speak to a judge about it to resolve the problem.
#* Core dumping a player's own teammates
#* Refusing to play competitively
#* Quitting a game because the player's team is losing.
#* Anything else your PE teacher told you was bad sportsmanship.
# Penalties for bad sportsmanship will be assessed based on degree of infraction, rate of infractions, and so forth. Basically, you might get away with something once when the judges sympathize with you, but don't expect it to happen a lot. The point is to have fun, and you should behave in a manner that is conducive to everybody having fun, not just you.
Luciferhttp://wiki.armagetronad.org/index.php?title=AFL_Rule_Interpretation&diff=19368AFL Rule Interpretation2007-07-08T05:32:13Z
Lucifer: /* Sportsmanlike behavior */

{{AFLTbl}}

This page is for judges, mainly. It serves as guidelines that should help them to interpret the rules when needed, and even ignore rules when it makes sense to do so. Players are invited to read this so that they will have a better idea what's expected of them, and what they can expect of the judges. Just keep in mind these are guidelines. Many of the topics discussed are going to require subjective decisions by the judges, and it's nearly impossible to codify what they should do in every situation, so we're not even going to waste time trying. The reason we have judges is to make calls that can't be made by a computer.

== Overall Guiding Principles ==

We're all agreed we want the league to be successful, right? The best way to ensure that will happen is to ensure that the league is fun for as many of the participants as possible. We'll even try to achieve the ideal of making it fun for everybody! The rules we have are designed to provide a structure that will eliminate useless bickering and encourage competitive play. Sometimes the rules themselves will cause useless bickering or discourage competitive play. That's the nature of rules in general. So when you're called upon to mediate between two players, two teams, two servers, a team and a server, or whatever, try to keep in mind that while you're all bickering, nobody is having any fun. So try to reach the best decision to serve the purpose of the league's existence as quickly as possible. Sometimes a thorough investigation will be required, in which case you'll need to watch the recording of the game in question, talk to players involved, or whatever. Most of the time, such an investigation won't be required, and you'll be able to go on the information you're given. There are a few decisions that absolutely can't be made without thoroughness, however.

* Kicking a player from the league
* Kicking a team from the league
* Disqualifying a game played

It may even be recommended in some situations like those listed that you should get another judge involved to make sure you're staying balanced on the issue. Don't be shy about it! Also, don't waste other people's time dealing with smaller issues that you should really be able to settle yourself.

== Roster Limits ==

The roster limits are designed to make the games as competitive as possible, and to allow for many teams to be established. For many in the world of Fortress, 5 players is the optimal team size during play. However, due to the nature of league play, it is necessary to have a roster that's larger than the number of players that can play at any point in time. Teams need alternates, let's just face that one down. Teams need a way to know that they will be able to play competitively even if most of their team doesn't show up. So let's do a little math, shall we?

The ingame 5 player limit is optimal because it provides the most flexibility for the least amount of cruft. Up to 5 players, everyone has a distinct role on the team. After 5 players, it starts to get a bit iffy, and when you reach 8, you have at least 2 players who contribute nothing to play, generally speaking. You can field a standard 3/2 offense/defense ratio. When the situation requires it, you can make it 4/1, 2/3, and even 1/4. That allows for nearly every possible play to be played by one team. When you look at these ratios, it becomes pretty clear that even if a team shows up with 4 players, they can play pretty competitively. Surely winning will be harder, but it's still strongly within the realm of possibility. So 4 players out of 10 are a minimum for playing a competitive game, right? That's 2/5 of the team! What other game can you play competitively when 3/5 of your team doesn't even show up to the game?

However, there are problems that may arise as a result of the roster limits. One thing we don't want is last-minute recruiting before each game. This is strictly not allowed. It may make sense for a one-off tournament that allows new signups all the way until the first game kicks off, but in league play that's just going to cause problems. The main problem is that the opposing team has been planning to play against a given team, and then on game day they're not playing that team, they're playing against some other team who has usurped the name. There is a lot of potential for exploit in a league if you can do last-minute recruiting. So we won't do it.

Our solution instead is to allow teams to drop anybody from their team at any time, but to add someone they must seek league approval. That means "get a judge". The judge gets to approve or disapprove of the change. This allows for trading. It also allows teams to kick the player they thought was good but turned out to be a total smeg in the smeg. However, once the regular season is over, no more team additions can be approved. Teams can still kick their teammates, but we're not even going to go anywhere near recruiting ringers for the playoffs.

The playoffs are supposed to be the teams that played in the regular season determining canonically who was the best that season. So if a team is suddenly a bunch of different players, they're no longer the team that played that season!

When asked to approve a teammate addition, you need to consider the team itself. Are they 9 players just seeking to add a tenth player, or are they 3 players trying to reach the competitive number of 4? What's happened to them? Did they have to kick a lot of players early on for teamkilling? Even in exceptional cases, you should always be guided by what makes it fun for everyone, not necessarily just for that team, but let's be realistic. A team that's going into the last month of play without a single win isn't terribly likely to hurt the league by picking up 2 more players after 3 of their players dropped out, right? I'm not saying be terribly lenient, I'm just saying to look at the team's situation. There are perfectly good reasons for a team to want to recruit another player after the rosters are locked, and you should try to let them when they have perfectly good reasons.

== Mediation ==

There's not a lot to say here, really. Mediation will be required when one team believes another has committed an infraction, particularly when the infraction could have caused them to win the game that otherwise should have been lost. One potential area for abuse is in the recommendation that both team captains have the server password. Let's consider the case where only one admin has that password and someone on the opposing team goes psycho and starts teamkilling. Obviously the team captain should kick that player from the server, but he might be tempted to wait another round or two. That would be cheating if it were done intentionally, obviously, and is strictly not allowed. It might even get the whole team kicked out, or the game's results turned against them. But you're not going to see it in a clear-cut way, you're going to see it in a way that makes it look like the team captain in question really couldn't possibly know about the situation and that he acted as soon as he did. What do you?

First you go back to basic principles. What's the fun answer to this question? Is it fun to have the team captains face off in some random sumo server, the winner's team claims the win in the disputed game? Now what's fair? Is the previously mentioned solution fair to the other players on each team? It probably isn't, but you could easily find yourself in a situation where the two team captains are legendary sumo players, and it'd be worth it just to add to the overall excitement of the league. A more traditional approach would require you to do a thorough investigation, get the server logs, look at the recording, talk to the other players, etc. You may find that kicking the team captain and letting the game results stand is the right solution. Maybe you take the two teams to a neutral server and have them face off again. Always keep in mind that nobody's having fun arguing or being screwed over by another team who's getting away with it.

== Showing up on time ==

This one's fairly obvious. If a team is consistently late and puts the day's game schedule behind, after 3-4 times, it becomes obviously reasonable to call a forfeit when they show up only 1 minute late. That team will hopefully be the exception, and most teams will show up on time. The reasonable guideline we'll follow here is "whatever keeps the games playing". So if a team shows up 40 minutes late and there's only 20 minutes before another team wants to take the grid, it's a forfeit. We're sorry the team that showed up couldn't play, but we've got games lined up that need to go through. But if there are no games lined up, and both teams still want to play, there's no good reason not to let them.

== Lag and our lack of tolerance for whining ==

I can't think of a good reason to put up with whining about lag, but we have to admit that other tournaments have the information that supports concluding ping has a role in a game. We have two solutions in place to deal with ping. One is the previously mentioned 10 person limit on the roster. It is hoped that teams will recruit across the pond so that they will generally field a mixed team, and that both teams in any game will be comparable to one another in average pings. However, that is a factor beyond our control.

So we created the second mechanism for dealing with lag, which is simply to alternate between servers favorable for each team. So each team plays each other twice, and they're guaranteed one server that is favorable to them (provided they chose such a server). The situation gets a little muddied in the playoffs, but for the most part, these two mechanisms should reduce the role that ping plays in any given game.

On the subject of whining, we will have a winzone. Nobody is required to take it, but folks who have participated in other tournaments have said time and time again that the defender has a huge advantage. The winzone exists to eliminate that advantage in the situation where it actually matters. The only other acceptable alternative is a death zone that kills everyone after some set amount of time. So take the winzone, and take the win.

== Sportsmanlike behavior ==

Making a call on sportsmanlike behavior is always going to be subjective. You need to try to consider the players that are there. It may be perfectly reasonable for one player to say to another "You suck", and for two completely different players to be penalized for it. Determining when a player is behaving badly will always be subjective, especially since a certain amount of trash-talking is inevitable, expected, and fun. The rule of thumb is that bad sportsmanship penalties should be given to the team, not individual players. Teams are expected to behave as a team and to deal with their own problems. Teams that have given a captain (which is most teams) have also reserved to themselves the power to drop a player from their team. In some special circumstances, the player might feel he was wronged and wish to seek some sort of retribution. Rarely will we give it, but depending on circumstances, we might be inclined to help that player find a different team so he can keep playing in the league. Teams that haven't declared a leader are going to have a hard time dropping players, and we might need to get more involved in the decision.

== Servers ==

Sanctioning a server is like dropping a nuclear bomb on the teams that have declared it as their home server. This is one decision we don't want to make if we don't have to. However, since teams have declared home servers, and many of them control their home servers, there will be a temptation to change server settings to favor the home team. Some of these changes are expected and can't be dealt with due to the nature of an internet game, some of these changes are completely unacceptable. In the case of server-side settings that clients don't even know about, it can even be impossible to determine if any cheating is happening. The rule is to generally try not to sanction a server, but as soon as it becomes known that a server has been cheating, the team owning it comes under some pretty severe problems.

* Does the team get to continue playing in the league?
* If so, do they get to keep their home server? (Usually a team found cheating should be sent to Lucifer's Lag Server as their new home, with all previous games changed to forfeits)
* Do they get to keep their current game record?
* Do they get to keep their current lineup?

Luckily, most of the server admins this time around are known by the league to be pretty trustworthy, so problems in this area aren't anticipated.

== Conclusion ==

In conclusion, try to keep in mind that the league exists for people to have fun, and the rules are there to lay down a foundation upon which the most people will have fun playing in the league. Sometimes it'll be necessary to interpret the rules creatively to keep the fun going, sometimes the rules will need to be interpreted rigidly to keep the fun going. But if everyone just behaves and tries to have fun and tries to help others have fun, the league should run smoothly to completion and we'll crown a champion.
Luciferhttp://wiki.armagetronad.org/index.php?title=AFL_Schedule&diff=19366AFL Schedule2007-07-07T23:32:20Z
Lucifer: /* The Schedule */

{{AFLTbl}}

This is the in-progress schedule for the July short season.

== Schedule Notes ==

== Scheduling Practices ==

== The Schedule ==

{{AFLTbl}}

This is the in-progress schedule for the July short season.

== Schedule Notes ==

== Scheduling Practices ==

== The Schedule ==

This is the in-progress schedule for the July short season.

== Schedule Notes ==

== Scheduling Practices ==

== The Schedule ==
