The Tronic Shovel
Note: most of this is copied from the Ladle page.
The Tronic Shovel is part of the Tron International Competition, an ambitious idea to create self-organising tournaments for Armagetron. The Shovel is the monthly version of the Tronic, and is played in the Sumo game mode (more specifically, team sumo). Depending on the amount of teams signed up, the Shovel is a single-elimination tournament with teams starting in the quarter or semifinals. All games will be played out over a few hours, so plenty of excitement as well as a climax
The primary objective for the Shovel is to increase the size of the competition, hoping to host an event with over 100 players. In order to reach that number of players, we need something like a marketing strategy. Is it through word of mouth... through advertising.. can players encourage others to join by posting invitations in other game forums? At the root of it all, however, is the game itself. It is essential that the first experience a player has of the game is a pleasurable one, and hence some thought must be paid to how new players are treated. Inviting new players on to teams, informing them of the Shovel, may provide the right support for them to have fun and develop as players, and thereby increase the level of competition globally. It is also important to put emphasis on Sumo's need for a regular competition that will encourage players to sign up with recurring teams, thus strengthening their ability to play with each other over the duration of the team's lifespan.
